Mixing it Up

October 10, 2012

You know what?

My head hurts.

And?

My toes are cold (Husby swears more hot days are ahead thus the thermostat stays at a balmy 65. FA-reezing!).

Don’t ask me why I’m laughing at things that aren’t even funny.

Not to mention, LuLu is looking at me like, “Please can we go to bed, already?”

So instead of me blabbering about something that’s only going to make sense to me, myself, and I…

Why not hear from you, for a change.

Yes. I think that sounds like a GREAT idea!

I know you’re out there. Say hi?

Or maybe you’ve got a random question you’ve been wanting to ask? (please no math questions. not my strongest subject)

And remember, you’re still the sprinkles on top of my cupcake.

Happy Wednesday! xo

Question: can you do a tour of your doll house?
And how do you fill your days now that you have two littles and a hubs who isn’t in school?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 1:31 am

I’ve thought about doing a mini tour in the past… but as I’ve said before; it’s literally a doll house (teeny-tiny and not overly impressive). But at least you all would be able to see I’m real. Even in our humble little home.

Post on our everyday life coming soon! And can I just tell you, I’m still ecstatic over him being home at night! Happy to have that behind us…

  • Leigh October 10, 2012 at 12:46 pm

    Hi!
I love florals and stripes together!
My question: You always cook the cutest, most delicious looking, creative food! What does your kitchen look like when you are done? I know it’s a strange question, but whenever I am posting about food on my blog, somehow my kitchen ends up looking like a train wreck and I’m wondering if I’m alone! It’s always a quick clean up, but man I know how to make a mess if I want to actually post that meal on the internet!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 1:38 am

Bahaha! Leigh, you’re right. In the beginning stages of the blog my kitchen looked more like a war zone at times. I hadn’t quite figured out how to keep it low-stress and clean as I went. I put a lot of pressure on myself. But honestly, now it’s just a routine. I keep the camera close by (in case it ends up turning into something I think you all would love as much as we did). AND… I’ve learned to clean as I go while keeping it simple. After all, it’s my real life and really what you see is no different than what we experience here at home.

  • Blaire October 10, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Another great outfit design! Love your glasses! Can you give us a day in your life? I loved the bedtime routine you shared but would love to see more ideas on how to balance family, meals, exercise, work, playtime etc. Thanks for all you do!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 1:40 am

Blaire, ask my teacher friends this question. I used to teach 1st grade and they’d tease me about my “life binder” (definitely worth teasing me over). Haha! As many of you have asked, I’ll give you a glimpse into what it looks like around here. But I think I’ll need to maybe do a series of posts in order for you to REALLY see how it works. It’s not perfect by any means but there’s definitely some regimen to it. Thanks for your comment and question, doll. xo

  • Megan October 10, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Silly question about your hair. I love your hair and have always wondered what line of products you use when you have your hair colored? Do they have to use a toner when coloring your hair? How often do you have your hair cut? I have had the worst luck when coloring my hair and have always admired your locks. Thanks for providing us the opportunity to ask questions!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 1:46 am

My color is by Wella (not sure what formula). No toner is used. I get my hair highlighted every 5 weeks (partial highlights), alternating with a full highlight every 3rd time. Does that make sense? So it’s a partial, partial, and then full. I rotate in that sequence every 5 weeks. My hair is cut about 4-5x per year. I’ll see if I can get more deets about the exact formula she uses. Thanks for the questions, Megan! xo

  • SHARON October 10, 2012 at 1:13 pm

How do you do it all and stay so glamorous?? Are you super organized or a go with the flow kinda girl? I love to think I am organized but we are always running out the door 10 minutes late and going sideways into the school parking lot every morning. I guess this proves I am not…. At least we are put together and stylin when we get where we need to be late or not!!!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 1:51 am

Great question! I like to think I’m both (or at least try to be). I’m super organized about some things (i.e. schedules) but obviously have my weak points too (aka my kitchen drawers that I’m currently overhauling). I’m not one to unravel at the seams if something comes up that’s more important. I’ve learned that those who are most adaptable are those who are the happiest. And at times when things are going exactly like I want them to, I go with flow and just be. It’s about balance (something I’ve been wanting to write about as well). Maybe it’ll be coming to a post near you. xo

  • Jenedy October 10, 2012 at 1:27 pm

How do you nurse a baby every few hours and keep your clothes cute? I feel like no matter how hard I try in the morning, I end up with a stretched out shirt that makes me feel frumpy. Any suggestions? Any knit shirts you’ve found that hold their shape well?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:06 am

Aww, Jen. You’re too cute. I guess I’m wearing mostly loose tops and hence no stretching?! If it’s a top that I’m overly worried about, I’ll change into basic t before feeding the babe. Let’s talk deets via phone (TMI)! haha!

  • kristal October 10, 2012 at 1:32 pm

How do you keep your creativity flowing and manage to execute it into a post? Can you share your time-management plan. Whatever it is, it’s working!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:10 am

The simple answer is more or less – sticking to a plan, setting aside time to accomplish it as simply as possible, and make sure it’s something you’re genuinely passionate about.

  • Marcie October 10, 2012 at 1:32 pm

I am with everyone else. Would love a day in the life post. Curious as to how you get it done. I am a full time working Mom to a 16 month old and there are just never enough hours in the day.

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:23 am

I’m right there with you, Marcie. An extra side for more time, please? It’s a never-ending cycle. For when we check off one thing off our to-do list, it gets replaced with something new to do. We’re never fully done. But there are ways to make it more manageable, enabling us to enjoy the journey along the way. Thanks for your comment, Marcie. And hats off to you for doing all that you do!

  • Laura October 10, 2012 at 1:40 pm

I absolutely love this outfit! I have been toying with the idea of mixing patterns and I think I could definitely do florals with stripes. They just work! And I love that you always have some cheaper items in your outfits but make them look stellar. I am totally going to scope out that cardigan at Forever 21 now!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:26 am

Thanks, Laura! This came together on a whim but it was fun! I’m all about a deal. And a good splurge too, at times. For me, it’s a little of both. Snag up that cardi quick! I think they sold out of the pink version online; but it’s still in stores.

  • Nicole-Lynn October 10, 2012 at 1:45 pm

I agree with Sharon– I’d like to know how you stay organized (and sane!). Any tips?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:29 am

We need a girls sleepover (with popcorn) so we can all share tips and tricks! I’m no expert by any means…

  • simplyinspiredmama October 10, 2012 at 2:01 pm

when do you find the time to blog? I have recently started and only have one little and it is hard. Also who is responsible for the pictures of yourself? what camera are you shooting on?
    Thanks and cute outfit!!!!
    simplyinspiredmama.com

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:40 am

Husby takes the pictures of me (bless him for his patience). We use a nikond5000. I primarily blog during naps and at night once the boys are in bed. It’s about having a plan, sticking to it (when possible) and letting it go to the wayside when more important things come up. Ultimately first priority is faith & family. Allowing blog to intermix and enhance the time with the family accomplishes both.

  • Dresden October 10, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Just wanted to say I adore your outfits, you make fashion so fun. I appreciate fashion bloggers, such as you, because I have totally changed my style…for the better…and learn to change it up with your inspiration. Thanks!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 2:40 am

Oh you’re too sweet! I’m glad you’re able to take something from it! Thank you, Dresden! xo

  • DevonRiesenberg October 10, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Definitely would also love a “day in the life” post, and a “behind the scenes” post, which food photography set-ups and who takes the pictures of you for the fashion posts πŸ™‚

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:08 am

Consider “day in the life” on my to-do list! Husby takes the fashion pictures. Not much to see behind the scenes… but if there’s something you’d like to see in particular, just let me know! Thanks, Devon.

  • Lara England October 10, 2012 at 2:39 pm

I love your hair color!! What do you use??

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:10 am

I get it done professionally at a salon that uses Wella hair color. Still have yet to find out the exact formula.

  • Sherrie October 10, 2012 at 2:40 pm

First off, you and your family are just adorable….Second, wanted you to know peeps of all ages love looking at your blog as I am well past the years of rasing little ones but still enjoy the pics and recipes you put on here…Last, it’s really fun to get little glimpses into your rl and (I see keller also asked) would love to see a “tour” of your home…I bet its as gorgeous as you are!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:16 am

Sherrie, you are adorable! That’s one thing I strive for; to see that there’s a little something for everyone who comes our way. Thank you for your comment. And yes, I’ll be sure to schedule a dollhouse tour coming to a post near you! ha!

  • itskellygirl October 10, 2012 at 2:47 pm

Hi! I just recently stumbled across your blog from Pinterest! Do you live in Colorado? If so, where? We just moved to Denver from Florida and I would love to know where you get your hair colored? I am a blonde too, and I have tried a couple of places, but I am not thrilled. I miss my Florida girl who knows how to do blondes! Help!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:19 am

Oh the battle of the blonde. You’re completely right. Blonde is SO hard to get right. I was in a heap of trouble when we moved. My best suggestion is to go to a salon that uses either Aveda or Wella based coloring products. I’ve emailed you some specific salons that might interest you! xo

  • jaclyn @ www.lilmsadventures.blogspot.com October 10, 2012 at 3:05 pm

You are so adorable! I love your outfits!! How do you find such cute clothes? I’ve tried dresses on at old navy.. any tricks on finding the right “style” for body type? for some reason they are either too big or too tight

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:21 am

It’s more or less trying it on to see if it looks good. I’m not one to prejudge an item of clothing if I think it may have potential. I’d rather try it on and then make a decision on it. I’m the queen of take backs. Most of the time I buy it and bring home to try on so that I can see it with my other clothes and see if it REALLY works or not.

  • Brittany October 10, 2012 at 3:21 pm

I too would love a tour of your home! You always have the cutest things to share! Random question too… Where can I find a wooden ring like the one you posted about in you anniversary post? My husband loved it!!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:25 am

Oh the wooden ring (that reeks of sweaty sneakers). Haha! No seriously, it does. I bought it at a hair salon but they don’t sell them anymore! I’m actually in the market for a new one.

  • Megan L October 10, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I would love some great breakfast ideas! It seems like I’m stuck on poached eggs for breakfast…mostly because I know I feel great starting my day off healthy. What are some good ideas for breakfast (other than yogurt, I can’t have yogurt and that is what every one always recommends to me)….ideas??!!! Love following you!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:28 am

      smoothies
oatmeal (with all sorts of mix-ins)
      eggs (all ways)
      breakfast sandwiches/burritos
      waffles (obviously), pancakes, french toast
      granola
      muffins and other baked goods

  • Lisa October 10, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Love your blog and all that you share! My question is, what are some of your favorite blogs that inspire you. I have a few that I keep up with pretty much daily and I’d love to know which ones are at the top of your list. Thanks!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:33 am

Hope this doesn’t come off wrong; but I don’t really read other blogs. One being I don’t have much extra time. When I do find the time, I tend to read my personal friends’ blogs (many that are private).

  • Nichole October 10, 2012 at 3:51 pm

So on the more serious side…how did you make the decision to stay home with your family? My husband and I are very seriously contemplating having me stay home with our family now that he has a new job and responsibilities that prevent him from picking up the slack when my super-hectic job is in full-on-chaos mode. We have two daughters 5 and 2 and have considered having more. I love what I do, but something has to give and preferably not my marriage, family well-being or personal sanity. I am excited at the opportunity to be home with my kiddos and focus on things around our home, but I am a little nervous and scared too. Any words of wisdom?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:43 am

It’s a personal decision that each family has to make on their own; and one that can change at any time depending on circumstances. For me, I was a teacher. Had I stayed teaching after my son was born, the majority of my salary would have gone to pay for childcare. We decided to forgo some luxuries in order for me to stay home. I’ve since found comfort is something my Mom has always told me, “You have a lifetime and then some to do all that you want to do.” For me, that means staying home and blogging on the side (for this season in life). But in the next season it could mean something completely different. We’ve been given time AND talents. It’s about making sure we’re using our talents (be it in whatever capacity that may mean) at the right time.

  • Elise Wannberg October 10, 2012 at 4:14 pm

ok girlfriend, seriously how do you not wash your hair everyday if you take a shower everyday? I am a fine-haired friend who must wash everyday, but I am so confused, do you use like a shower cap?? weird question I know, haha
    -Elise <3

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:44 am

I’m a bath kind of girl. I wash my hair in the sink most of the time and bathe when I have time to enjoy it.

  • Ashley October 10, 2012 at 5:41 pm

    Hi There!

I LOVE your blog! It’s so well put together and your pictures are always to die for! I never really followed any blogs before stumbling upon yours on pinterest a few months back. I have been hooked even since though! I really have read like every single one of your posts!

You have even inspired me to start my own blog, but I seriously underestimated how much work it would be! How do you find the time!? I supposed I just need to prioritize it more…

Anway, just thought I would finally say “hi”, especially since you asked!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:47 am

Hi, new friend! Good to hear from you and congrats on starting your own blog!

Oh the question of time. It’s something I’m going to address now that many of you have asked.

Make sure the blog enhances your life, not detracts from it. Trust me, it’ll take up as much time as you’ll give it. But remember, YOU are the boss behind it. Sometimes the right answer is No… the blog can wait.

  • Amanda @ Once Upon a Recipe October 10, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Love this outfit – the stripes and floral combo are stunning together! Oh, and your hair-washing practices are rubbing off on me. I am trying to go 3 days without washing (but using dry shampoo), although my hair does not look as fantastic as yours! Please share more hair secrets!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:48 am

Meep! Congrats on dirty hair! just kidding. No but really, it’s a good thing that needs praising. I’ll try to share more hair (ooh that rhymes).

  • Katie Ludeman October 10, 2012 at 5:59 pm

I love your blog! I found you on Pinterest and have been a follower ever since! πŸ™‚

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:48 am

Makes my ticker smile. Thanks for your loyal support, Katie!

  • Vanessa October 10, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Hi! I love your blog, it’s a sweet little treat for me every day. Do you guys plan on having more kids? πŸ˜‰

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:50 am

We do plan to have more. How many? Who knows. Very content with 2 at the moment…

  • Clarissa October 10, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Love love love your blog!! I’ve used so many of your ideas. Your hair color is absolutely perfect. Would you mind sharing the colors you or your stylist use? I have had such trouble getting my blonde color right. When the stylist asked me what colors to use, I have no idea. So I have to leave it entirely up to them. Would really appreciate you answering.

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:51 am

I only use a bright blonde. The other is my natural ashy blonde. Not sure the exact formula she uses. I can always see if she’ll tell me?! I have an appointment coming up…

  • MANDA October 10, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Hey girl. I always notice how flawless your skin looks. What’s your secret weapon? Or are you one of those lucky ones born with perfect skin.. Also, I’m digging’ those boots. Where are they from? Thanks for all the cuteness!!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:55 am

Definitely NOT one born with perfect skin. I actually have a skin disorder called icthyosis. I have a mild form of it, thankfully. It more or less means I have really dry skin that has a hard time exfoliating on it’s own. Affects my legs the worse and not my face hardly at all. But using good skin care makes ALL the difference. Absolutely LOVE my new regimen from annmarie (see the giveaway awhile back). Boots? They’re a few years old made by Me.Too.

  • alexa October 10, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Please do a house tour, that would be awesome!

Yes, how do you do it all?

Can you share your pinterest link please?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:57 am

Yes to the house tour (you all twisted my arm and right leg).

I don’t do it all. Trying? Yes. Doing? Hmm. Wish I COULD do it all.

I have a pinterest account (I think it’s xopinkpistachio?) but I don’t use it. I’m totally out of touch, I know.

  • Maggie October 10, 2012 at 9:21 pm

More babies! Just a little partial, but on a serious note, I think a tour of your dollhouse with all of the holiday decorations that you have come up with over the next few months!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:58 am

I’m assuming you mean more baby posts, my dear maggie. I’m not one for being pregnant again anytime soon. I’m struggling with the decor situation. Most of it is stuff from last year (and you KNOW I can’t repeat a post)… What about posting the new stuff I’m adding to the old?

  • MS October 10, 2012 at 9:59 pm

What kind of camera do you use?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 3:59 am

      Nikon D5000 πŸ™‚

  • casie youngberg October 10, 2012 at 10:37 pm

Aw your so cute!! I would love to see a post about organization especially for small spaces! Also maybe some advice about spending quality time (suggestions?) with a husband that spends far too many hours at school/in front of a football game?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:01 am

Husby’s making me do a post on this. I’m kind of embarrassed about it, really. My house is orderly. Completely organized, it is not. But it’s getting there. Expect some before and afters. Another date night ideas post is also coming… πŸ™‚

  • Tencia October 10, 2012 at 11:06 pm

I just stumbled across your blog yesterday from pinterest and just fell in love with it! Your pictures are amazing and I love the parties you’ve shown. They’re so put together, creative and cute! Can’t wait to see what else you share πŸ™‚

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:02 am

Welcome, Tencia! And a BIG thank you for your sweet words! It means so much, truly! xo

  • Jessica October 10, 2012 at 11:54 pm

I too found you on Pinterest and enjoy your posts every day. Thank you for sharing all aspects of your life and family – beautiful family and practical posts! I would love to know what program you use to edit your pictures. They are beautiful. Thank you!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:04 am

Wow, your explosion of compliments is going to take me through to next week! THANK YOU for being a BIG ray of sunshine, you cute girl! I use photoshop elements (aka photoshop for dummies).

  • Megan October 11, 2012 at 12:17 am

You might have already shared this, but can you share how you and your husband met? I’m a sucker for love stories. πŸ™‚

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:05 am

Come to think of it… don’t think I have shared our little love story. The jist? Persistence. And I caved. No really, maybe I’ll go into detail for our upcoming anniversary in December. <3

  • Kira H. October 11, 2012 at 3:55 am

I second the question what kind of camera and lens do you use?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:07 am

Nikon D5000 with the standard lens and 35mm

  • Kseniya October 11, 2012 at 6:56 am

Love your outfit and how you manage to style things that I wouldn’t have the fantasy to put together. Many more beauty posts would be greatly appreciated for sure. πŸ™‚

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:08 am

Beauty tut coming next week. Hope it doesn’t disappoint… but then again I am kind of a HUGE nerd on camera.

  • Mikala October 11, 2012 at 1:39 pm

I’m dying to know how you lost that baby weight so quickly.. you look fab!

What are your secrets and how are you fitting exercise into that busy schedule?

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:11 am

I try to eat whole foods (meaning hardly anything processed), not because I’m dieting but to be healthy. It ends up keeping my weight fairly regular. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some treats (as you might have already figured out). I do a yoga dvd and post natal bootcamp (only 18 min long 3x a week) at home. I can do a post on this, if you’d like…

  • cv October 11, 2012 at 7:01 pm

How do you have time to do hair, makeup, and outfits for photo shoots with two kids at home?

    • Ashley October 12, 2012 at 3:57 am

I agree!! What is your morning routine like to get yourself ready, as well as getting 2 little ones ready for the day?? You always look so good, I’d love to know how you juggle it all, and still have time to cook amazing meals!
      Xoxo Ashley

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:14 am

5 minute makeup (the tutorial awhile back), wash my hair every 5 days (also in a post… dry shampoo), and outfits don’t take much more than 5 minutes either. I’m done in about 15 minutes each day. I will spend more time if it’s for date night or when Husby is home.

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:25 am

@Ashley, as part of the “day in the life” post maybe I’ll put a little schedule of what we do hour by hour as well as certain tasks that are set aside for specific days…

  • Sarah October 11, 2012 at 7:48 pm

just discovered your blog and i’m kinda obsessed … i love all of your fashion tips, tutorials and not to mention your cute family!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:15 am

Awww, shoot. You’re so sweet, Sarah. Thank you!!! I take obsessed in the most flattering way possible.

  • Nikki October 11, 2012 at 11:54 pm

    Ditto what everyone else said…
Love the outfit, and always LOVE your hair! How do you always look so put together, have time to cook, and a family life? I seriously need help with time management before baby #1 arrives in a couple weeks!

    • missy October 12, 2012 at 4:18 am

Congrats on little nugget-to-be!!!! I’ll try and squeeze in the time to to a time-management post. Is that an oxymoron? Or is it just me?! It takes planning as well as being flexible with the plan, to make it work. You’re SO sweet, Nikki. Wishing you all the best with the babe. xo

  • missy October 12, 2012 at 12:10 pm

If you find you have a question you’d still like to ask… Please be so kind to ask on our Facebook page. I’ll be able to address it more quickly! Again, thank you for all of your loyal support! Make today happy! xo

Oh, yes I like Megan’s request–a little bit about how you and your husband fell in love (and maybe a few wedding pictures from memory lane for us obsess-ers of your blog!)

    Hey Missy,

I just love your Fabulous in Five piece. I wanted to see what kind of mascara you use? I have tried so many different kinds and all still make me have a smudgy look under my eyes as if it runs as the day goes on. I have tried waterproof as well and still does it. Not sure if maybe it is the mascara or the eye liner. Any suggestions? I just love your blog. I look forward to reading it each day!

Hey there! I have tried posting a comment on a different post but thought I’d try again. I just wanted to say congratulations on such a popular and fun blog! I remember working with you in Mrs. Olsen’s first grade class long ago in Sugar City. It is fun to see how you are doing and your family is adorable! I’ve got 2 little girls of my own now. πŸ™‚ Love to hear from you!

I’m searching for the boots you posted by jcrew, but can’t find them. Do you know the name?

i seriously love the rose sweater and have been searching the interwebs for it. and cannot find it. the link to forever 21 is an orange and grey looking color…did you buy it in store?

I actually bought it online (same link provided). It looks like the pink version is sold out. However, I can tell you at the time I had a really hard time deciding between the pink vs the orange. I think BOTH are SO cute!
