Athens

September 21, 2011

The famous song, “Tradition!” belted by Tevia in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” depicts a father relaying the importance of tradition to his daughter. Athens is such a place. Everywhere we visited seemed to echo the sound of trades being passed down through the family line.

First stop? The Parthenon where we learned about the building (which was amazing) and Greek mythology, which was… yawn (serious snooze-fest).

Afterwards, we paid a visit to Stavros, also known as The Poet, a well-known sandal maker (whose hand-crafted sandals for The Beatles, Jackie-O, and others) and recites poetry while making custom fitted sandals. No poetry was recited as his son explained, “He’s at home resting. Sorry, my father’s in his late 80’s.” Guess we’ll never know if he’s a better poet or sandal maker. However, everything we had envisioned when meeting the poet, seemed to be the same with Pantelis (his son), who now carries on the family tradition. The impeccable precision that went into making my sandals was astounding! The phrase, fits like a glove, has definitely taken on a new meaning for my footsies. His father would be proud.

This was the highlight I’d been waiting for all day; that and tasting authentic Greek food. Which was, by the way, WOW! I would’ve never known what I was missing until I tried a Greek salad prepared in a Greek kitchen. Husby chose the slow roasted beef with eggplant. The owner modeled how to eat the dish correctly (not with fork & spoon but rather with bread as the utensil).

How about those pastries in the street? You’d think my love muffin would’ve snatched the whole cart. It’s like rubbing salt in the wound each time I remind him how he should’ve tried one. Culture equation learned: Food is equal to if not greater than site seeing.

Wow. I love seeing these pictures and reminding myself how young America is. And yes, Greek food is AMAZING! Have fun!

It’s so very true. Our way of life is completely different, not necessarily better in a lot of ways… but then again new is very nice as well.

Um custom sandals and authentic Greek eats – you are one lucky lady!!!

    • missy September 22, 2011 at 1:38 pm

I kept saying the same thing… Is this seriously real?

  • Arden B September 21, 2011 at 3:45 pm

    • missy September 22, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Tell him I sent ya! He’ll give the name of the restaurant we ate at too… off the beaten path away from tourist traps! What an adventure! So happy for you, Arden! xo

oh my word! I would love to visit Greece. i love the food and would love to pick up a pair of my own “Roman Holiday”-esque sandals. 🙂 And I do so adore your birdie top.. where’s it from? I have a slight thing for birds, as you can see on my blog… my new bathroom decor kind of went nuts with the birds. Anyway, love these pics! It’s great to live vicariously through your vacation, since I’m stuck at work and can’t take a vacay right now. 🙂

Photos over there just truly take themselves, don’t they? Amazing backdrops. And that Greek salad is calling to me through the photo – that slab of feta … mmm!

    • missy September 22, 2011 at 2:12 pm

The feta was unlike any feta I’ve ever tasted. I don’t know it can be so extremely different but it just was. The olives and fresh olive oil (made from olive trees in the backyard). It was crazy good!

All of your AMAZING pictures of Italy and now Greece are making me go crazy! Greatest pictures ever! It looks like you guys had tons of fun! I am so jealous! Can wait to see more pics.

    • missy September 22, 2011 at 2:12 pm

You’ll have to go one day and see it in person. I don’t even think the pictures do it justice.

  • elsa benson September 21, 2011 at 7:39 pm

Pleased to meet you, whitney! My word, what a compliment! No, no one’s ever told me that; but I’m extremely flattered. Can’t wait to read your blog as well! xo

I love how happy you and Ryan look in these pictures! I can’t wait to see the rest from your trip!
ps. I think we need to make some donuts next time we’re together!

    • missy September 22, 2011 at 2:14 pm

We were happy! Just soaking it all in (minus the donut that should’ve been in our faces).

  • Allison J September 22, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Seriously drooling over that hunk of feta. YUM!

    • missy September 27, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I could take a hunk of feta every.day.of.my.LIFE! Mmm.

  • Tisha September 26, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Missy, you bought the same sandals I did from the Sandalmaker! How funny. Except those are the ones where I lost my straps in Rome. And mine are way dark because of the sun and the olive oil I rubbed on them after all these years.

p.s. I can’t believe Ryan didn’t get a doughnut because they were amaze. Don’t tell him I said that though.

    • missy September 27, 2011 at 1:48 pm

We must have the same taste, friend! I wanted another pair (the spartans) too; but decided to be nice & have them made for my Mom. She was thrilled. Glad I decided to share! ha! Oopsie. I told Ry. I couldn’t help it. Obviously jealous of you.
