Loose Curls from Pink Pistachio on Vimeo.

Here it is, lovelies! And yes, I’m aware that the coloring is ooper bleh 70’s-ish. But it’s about the technique, right? Let me know how smokin’ you look by sending me some before/after pics!

  • Tricia April 28, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Hey cutie! You crack me up. But I always appreciate the great tips. I want to hear more about this dry shampoo process. My hair gets too dried out if I wash it everyday, so what do you do?

    • missy April 28, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Ah, yes. The blessed dry shampoo. Quite possibly my favorite beauty item EVER! Like, that’d be on my top 10 list of things to bring if I was stranded on a deserted Island. How ’bout this? I’ll just to a whole post in honor of your haute self. The hair regimen is a whole shabangalang bit that needs explaining. I wash my hair every 4-5 days! Don’t stop reading bc you think I’m some hobo. But it’s bc my hair is healthier for it. And it doesn’t get dirty until the 4-5 day! Yep! It’s true. Hair can be trained. You’ve poked the sleeping bear. I’ll explain in an upcoming post… πŸ˜‰

  • Jessi April 28, 2011 at 6:21 pm

  • Jill April 28, 2011 at 7:36 pm

I am inspired once again. I know there are other hair tutorials out there but I really like yours…:). I will try it out this weekend for my hot date with hubby… while he will not notice, I am sure, it will still be worth it!

    • missy April 28, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Jill, you’ll be so smokin he’ll be sayin’, “uh, mrs? those curls are makin’ me crrrazy!” Let me know how it turns out for ya! Thx for the praises! Tee hee! {heart giggles}!!

  • Breanne April 28, 2011 at 9:04 pm

so cute! i do the loose curls as well but i’m gonna try your technique next time! i sooooo badly need to train my hair again. I’m washing like every other day… blahhh!

    • missy April 30, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Training the hair is key πŸ™‚ Would love to see your gorgeous locks with an after pic!

  • Emily April 30, 2011 at 2:58 pm

loved the tutorial!!! now, can you tell me how to do my hair with both of my kids in my bathroom???!!!

    • missy April 30, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Do it while simultaneously cooking dinner, changing stink pants, and while running on the treadmill. C’mon now. You’ve got this! haha! I do it during nap time or even before bed sometimes.

  • Jamie May 2, 2011 at 5:18 am

Like many others, I have been coveting that pretty hairdo of yours. I can’t wait to try it out!!! I’m curious to see if it will work with my hair. It’s bit stubborn and very thick. Wish me luck!! (By the way, I voted for you and will continue to vote daily until the deadline! I LOVE pink pistachio and think you and your cuteness deserve to win! I wish I had more than 1 functional computer so I can vote for you 1000+ times. Maybe I’ll have to sneak into a library somewhere… πŸ˜‰ )

    • missy May 2, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I’m glad “my cuteness” is worthy to win in your eyes! Haha! You’re hilarious! And hi. You’re too sweet for voting! Eat a cupcake… You are what you eat – so eat a sweet. Thanks, Jamie!

  • Kimberly May 4, 2011 at 11:36 am

What brand of curling iron do you use. I am use to the velcro rollers and don’t use curling irons. However, I love the loose curls and am ready to give it a try. Can you get me started the the right direction??? Thanks!

    • missy May 18, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Miss Kimberly! I use a Hot Tools 1 inch barrel. I got it at Sally Beauty Supply. Best of luck! I’d love to know your tricks with velcro! I’ve about given up on mine! πŸ™‚

  • Michelle May 9, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Amazing!! You’ve changed my life forever with this tutorial! THANK YOU!!!

    • missy May 9, 2011 at 3:03 pm

EEEK! Changed your life forever?!!? You’re kinda making my head swell which is now oozing with flattery! You’re too kind! So stoked it turned out for you! This is the only technique that I’ve found that’s the easiest to do with yielding longer results! Yay!!! Send me a pic of your lovely locks! melissa[at]pinkpistachio[dot]com

  • Eljay Ono May 18, 2011 at 1:32 pm

I found your blog last night and watched this tutorial – tried it this morning and have gotten 3 compliments and it’s only 9:30am! I used a 1 1/2″ curling iron but definitely think the 1″ will make it look even better (and will be easier to work with). I’ll keep working on my technique but thank you so much for posting this. I have always wondered how people get their hair to look like that!

    • missy May 18, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Oh happy day! This makes my heart smile! I’d love to see a pic of your luscious locks! If you would do me a teensie favor? The friendlies who complimented you… would you send them my way? Thx, lovely!

    • missy May 28, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Misty, you’re a “peach” no pun intended! Thanks for being so easy & fun to work with. It’s not hard styling someone who’s got it all… looks & heart. xo

Omg!!!! I loved it I did it on my hair and it was amazing thanks so much ur freaking awesome woman!!!!!!!

  • Brianna Vera December 19, 2011 at 6:31 am

Hey I just came across this and really want to try it out.But my hair is naturally wavy and frizzy,Do i straighten it then curl it or just leave it natural and curl it?

    • missy December 19, 2011 at 5:05 pm

I’d recommend straightening first. Maybe even wear it straight the first day and curl the second day so you can enjoy both styles and so you’re not exhausted! I have naturally wavy hair and like how the curls look better when my hair is straight first. Hope you love the results! xo

  • Jordan April 20, 2012 at 1:49 am

trying this tonight so i hope it works out and stays for my day tomorrow, my hair tends to get flat easily but i feel like i can make it work! thanks for all of your great tips!

  • Stephanie May 21, 2012 at 3:02 am

Did you use any heat protection spray? And if so, what product did you use?

    • Lisa May 27, 2012 at 3:56 am

I used Chi which she recommends in her straight hair tutorial. So far, I really like it. They sell the generic brand at Sally Beauty. Good luck!

  • Lisa May 26, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Love your site! Just tried this method this morning. Going out of town this weekend and didn’t want to spend the whole time getting ready. I’m fully equipped with my curls and my dry shampoo, let’s see how long this will last!

  • Shontelle May 27, 2012 at 4:43 am

I love Love LOVE! your website! I do have a question though. My hair is medium/fine but I have A TON of it so it doesn’t stay curled that well and it takes forever to do! Is your hair pretty thick? I find all these cute styles but then I try them and they don’t work out because I have so much darn hair!

  • Caroline May 30, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I just found your blog through pinterest. I love your tutorials! Especially for straightening. My hair falls completely flat if I straighten it, but hopefully if I take the extra steps you do it won’t.

But what do you do with your hair at night? Especially to keep these curls going for 3 days! I’d love that convenience!

  • Jennifer June 1, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I found your tutorial and have loved the results. I am trying to train my hair to go more days between washes…so my question-what do u do with your hair at night? Thanks so much!!

  • Rachel June 11, 2012 at 2:19 am

I was wondering how you sleep with you hair curly or straight to make it last three days? Do you put it up or hand it down? Do you need to touch up in the morning?

    Thanks! You are great!

  • Whitney June 21, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Thanks so much for posting this! It’s helped me so much in styling my frizzy hair and I’ve gotten tons of compliments πŸ™‚ I’m so happy!

  • Kim August 14, 2012 at 5:17 am

I’ve never tried dry shampoo. Do you just spray or sprinkle it in? Also have very curly/frizzy hair so I too will try to straighten, and try your loose curl technique on day 2. So glad I found your tutorial!! Thanks!

  • Amanda August 16, 2012 at 10:18 pm

i love this post! thank you thank you:) I do something similar but I like this technique. question for ya… how do you get your hair to last during the night while you sleep? like do you put it up or sleep on it down or whatnot:) thank you!

    • missy August 17, 2012 at 1:12 am

I just sleep on it as normal (down). If I pull it up it has weird kinks in the am. I do touchup with the curling iron, if needed… but don’t add additional mousse because there’s enough product in it already to hold the new curls. Hope that make sense! πŸ™‚

  • Kimberly August 19, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Hello!! I came across your fantastic website..I can’t wait to try this and your dry shampoo. I have tried several brands with no luck. I am a pure grease ball in less than 24 hours and resort to a hat if need be. Unfortunately hats are a no-no at work so I must wash instead. THANK YOU !

  • Kim Kauffman August 27, 2012 at 3:59 am

Just found this tonight and promptly went and tried it out. Loved it! I never thought about wrapping the hair around the curling iron and it worked great! My husband was so confused why I was fixing my hair before bed. I couldn’t wait until tomorrow when I’d have a kiddo tugging on my legs πŸ™‚

  • Breelyn September 1, 2012 at 3:12 pm

How do you sleep on your curls? I feel like mine go flat when I sleep on them….

  • Breelyn September 1, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Oops, just read above where you answered my question to another follower. Thanks! πŸ™‚

  • Becky September 6, 2012 at 7:27 pm

    Hey there!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the curls! I can’t wait to try! πŸ™‚
Question- when doing this style, do you flat iron your hair first or just start as is? I wash my hair at night most of the time drying it a little and letting it air dry over night. When I get up I have a natural wave to it already with a fun frizz!
I dont have a 1 inch barrel at the moment so do you think a 1/2 inch will work for the time being? It will be just small/tighter wave look?

I am loving your site!! Ordered up some make up today after watching your 5 minute make-up tutorial. Im super excited to try it all out! Thanks for the tips. I have two little girls under the age of 3 and like you us mom’s have no time to get ourselves put together. Hopefully this helps!

AHH!! Your blogs are perfect for my lack of hair knowledge! Thank you so much!

  • Margo September 17, 2012 at 11:59 pm

So great! Do you comb yor hair the following mornings??

  • Christy September 25, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I can’t wait to try this! My hair never holds curl very well, but then again I’ve never tried the mousse first. Hope it turns out as pretty as your hair! Thanks for posting this video.

  • Thach October 1, 2012 at 6:09 am

I’m planning to do loose curls but will my hair be back to normal after I wash it ? Because I’ve straightened it last year and it is still straight till now…

  • Tiffany Young October 4, 2012 at 9:13 pm

Okay, I have attempted to curl my hair many times. Every attempt ended in failure. I watched this video, got inspired and tryed again. I can now say that I have successfully curled my hair! I feel fabulous! Thank you so much, your video was very helpful!

  • Staci October 11, 2012 at 6:07 am

Could this work with a straigthener to curl instead of a curling iron?

  • Molly October 17, 2012 at 8:25 pm

my hair doesn’t hold a curl, any help?

  • Talah Goodwin October 18, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Wow- I found a link to your blog on pinterest and am so glad I did! After watching your tutorial this weekend, I tried this this morning and it turned out beautifully!! (I probably should have allowed myself more time given that it was a hectic weekday morning, but it was so worth it!) Thank you!!

  • Kylie Pearce November 22, 2012 at 9:22 am

Thanks so much! Best Best Best hair curling tutorial ever!!!!

  • Michelle November 26, 2012 at 12:33 am

Silly question… When you go several days without washing your hair, you still shower though, right? Doesn’t the steam flatten your hair and the humidity make it greasy?

    • missy November 26, 2012 at 3:30 am

I like to take a bath… doesn’t seem to mess it up.

  • Katie December 5, 2012 at 2:21 am

I just discovered you last week! In my 28 years I have never been able to curl my own hair and I tried this for my work Christmas party on Friday and it worked! Thank you SO much! My life is forever changed!

  • Cassie December 17, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Yayy!! I was so excited when I found this tutorial on Pinterest! My hair is so thick and tough to curl, that usually by the time I get done with the top section of my hair, the bottom portion has fallen completely straight. Ugh! I tried this technique yesterday for familiy photos, and couldn’t be happier!! Loved the outcome, and my hair actually held a curl! I did have 2 questions though:
    1. Silly question, but do you brush your hair before bed/when you wake up?
    2. Do you freshen up your hair and recurl some fallen pieces in the morning?
    Thanks!!! πŸ™‚

  • Kim January 4, 2013 at 1:38 am

I have the same question as Cassie about brushing. When I brush my hair at night (and esp on day 2), the curls all come out πŸ™ and it feels icky from the hairspray/mousse combo. I don’t have stick straight hair so I’m not sure if I shouldnt be “brushing” it or what …

    • missy January 4, 2013 at 2:07 am

Ah yes… a minor detail I failed to mention. My apologies for my airheadedness. I don’t brush my hair all the way through. Day 1 & 2 I don’t brush at all. By day 3 it needs a little attention. I lightly brush the underneath most part (and re-curl casually, if needed) and also lightly comb (don’t use a brush) at my roots but not further down. Hopefully this makes more sense now. πŸ™‚

  • Christina January 23, 2013 at 1:53 am

I can’t wait to give this a try in the morning! I have been trying to find a way to get this style, I always see it on other girls and have envied the cute but relaxed look! I never knew that the secret was in wrapping hair AROUND the clamp! I will let you know how it goes! Love your blog, PS πŸ™‚

    • Christina January 23, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Update: I followed the video this morning and my hair turned out awesome!!! It’s 2:15pm and the curls are still in tact! Usually when I curl using the clamp (ie: Shirley Temple curls), I have to use a LOT of hair spray to get them to stay in place… for whatever reason this twisting method helps and I used a lot less hair spray! Just a few times around my whole head to bump up the volume up top. Thank you soooo much! It added some extra time to my morning routine but it’s so worth it! I’ve been getting compliments all day!

  • Misty January 23, 2013 at 8:15 pm

have you ever gotten that nasty parted look on the back of your head? or where your hair wont lay flat at your crown after your’ve slept on it? how do you fix that without washing all of your hair??

    • missy March 3, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Good question… you can mist it with water and blow-dry with a round brush… or use a flat iron. πŸ™‚ Hope this helps.

  • Ashley Springer January 24, 2013 at 11:03 pm

I just have to tell you that your blog has been such a HUGE source of inspiration for me lately. I am so very thankful to have found you! I am now only washing my hair twice a week (leaving me so much more time for my two babies), I have beautiful waves I never thought possible with my stick straight hair, I have finally been able to master the art of “falsies” and have more than enough new make up products to keep me busy for quite some time. You are adorable. A true beauty.

    xo

  • Julia May 8, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Hii! I recently found your website and I’m already obsessed with it! πŸ™‚ My senior prom is coming up in a few weeks, and I was wondering if you had any ideas/ videos as to how I should do my hair (since you’re an expert at it haha) my hair is shoulder-length and naturally straight! Oh and my dress is long/ strapless and I’m wearing dangly earrings!
    Thanks so much! πŸ™‚

  • Bridget c. December 4, 2013 at 6:19 am

Can’t wait to try this tomorrow. Practiced a couple times in my bathroom after watching this video and am very pleased with the result! I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the perfect loose curl for a long time now and former attempts have always failed. Thanks so much!

  • Hanna February 21, 2014 at 8:41 pm

Your hair is gorgeous! thanks a lot for this tutorial =) I will see how it turns out with my karmin g3 clipless curling iron!
