Soak It All In

February 18, 2016

It’s a fact of life: water is good for us. But sometimes what comes straight from the tap is anything less than good — chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, among others. Did you know there are ways to reduce those chemicals naturally? Neither did I, until my sister enlightened me on the subject. Vitamin C is great to build immune system strength, but when added to water can neutralize chloramine (chlorine and ammonia) which are used to treat water; and can be toxic if consumed, inhaled or applied to the skin (source). In 1991 the EPA put out a statement saying the average person can absorb more contaminants from bathing and showering than from drinking polluted water. Children are at even great risk with a greater “surface-area-to-body-weight” ration than adult and especially since systems and organs are still developing (source). With a little research, there are many things that can be done to help: water filters, bath ball de-chlorintaors, and DIY bath soaks. Creating your own soak can reduce chemicals while replacing them with essential minerals (that most of us are deficient in). Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin. Magnesium helps to regulate vital enzymes, reduce inflammation, and help muscle and nerve function. Sulfates help improve absorption of nutrients while flushing out toxins (source). Coupling epsom and himalayan salts with the natural healing properties of clay (known to bind to heavy metals and remove them from both body and bath water); and you’ve got yourself an easy and healthy solution to everyday bath time.

Hi Erika… that’s odd? I checked all of our computers and smart devices and it seems to be pulling up just fine? Maybe try clearing your cookies?

It is blurry on my iPhone too, even when I tried to save the photo 🙁 I too am very interested in the recipe! My 7 month old absolutely loves bath time and it honestly never crossed my mind that it could come with risks, so scary.

I am loving this blog post! We have been slowly phasing out chemical laden products in our home and have been using essential oils for a year now. I will be making some of this to try with my littles.
