Family Fun Sentiments

Playing with Light

May 4, 2016

playing with light (1 of 1)When you’re accustomed to pulling-out your camera for the fun family outings or anticipated projects, sometimes you miss life’s little snaps in-between. Lately, I’ve been working on keeping my camera closer at hand. I’m trying to improve this little hobby (hope to be talent) of mine, which unfortunately for me, takes insane amounts of practice. At times, that can be quite frustrating for my ambitious type A personality. I pray for patience in the process; but want it right now! ha! I see the flaws, imperfections, and the long road ahead — yet that drives and motivates me all the more. Because really, the reason I do all of this — why I’ve spent years documenting, recording, posting recipes, projects, and everything in between, is to truly capture what my family means to me. I want to fully justify their individual beauty cocooned inside these moments that make my heart flutter. In essence, I’m letting you in on a secret: I’m not sure I’ll ever arrive at accomplishing such a lofty goal. But that won’t stop me from constantly trying. And hopefully when they’re grown, I’ll be gratified knowing they’ll stay little (at least, in pictures) forever. Pillows (blog) (3 of 6)sbsPillows (blog) (2 of 6)

He was the last to wake from a family nap. Bed pillows strewn on the floor taunting him to play. Overcast sky and low afternoon light prompting my heart to record it.

    Missy,
I feel like I WROTE THIS! I too take photos of my girls for that purpose. What do you do with all of the photo? Do you make old school albums? Blow favorites up and throw them on a wall? I’m at such a loss! Love your blogs!

I put most on our external hardrive for safe keeping. We also have a little gallery wall in our hallway, with intentions to rotate the pictures out every so often. I want to blow some up for our master bedroom and office, as well! Nothing better to adorn our walls then our babies!!

    Missy,
I love your pictures! You truly do have a talent. I’m just beginning to delve into taking pictures as I just got a proper camera. Do have any websites, classes, or blogs that would help me learn this art? The reason why i would like to learn is to capture my family the way you are capturing yours. Also, I just love, love the bedding-especially the blue stripe duvet. Do you mind letting us know where it’s from? Thanks for your time.

Congrats on your new hobby! You’ll love it! I personally haven’t taken classes or know of any off the top of my head (but know they’re out there). I started in Aperture Priority mode – where you can choose the depth of field and the camera chooses the rest of the setting automatically. I did that for the first year or so until I felt comfortable. Then I went manual one Christmas and haven’t looked back!

I have loved all of your photos and such a great hobby for you!! So I was wondering where you store all of your photos (and videos)? I have a google cloud but my computer hard drive and iphone gets so full, I move them to an external hard drive or the Google drive. But it’s a struggle for me, and curious what you do for them all? Enjoy your blog!!

I asked the same thing! It’s so overwhelming!

The struggle is REAL, my friend! I use an external hardrive too! xo

I have loved your blog for years and am so inspired by not only your words, but your photos. I too am an avid hobbyist photographer and am looking at buying a new lens. I have a Canon 6D but would love a lens that would allow me to get the blur and dreamy light you have in your photos. Any suggestions? I’d love to hear what you use. And if you have a blog post on this, please feel free to direct me to it. Thanks so much! 🙂
