Love at Home

September 15, 2016

love-at-home-blog-15-of-21Our family goal slash resolution for September is to show an increase of love at home. As silly as it may sound to make a milk carton house to collect acts of love, it’s actually working for us. To explain a little more: every Monday night we reinforce that month’s theme with a lesson or fun activity. The first week we introduced the concept, role-played different scenarios in which love was or wasn’t expressed (cutting remarks vs words or affirmation, selfishness vs thoughtfulness, arguing vs resolutions, serving others and being helpful etc). With each category discussed we glued a design element on our house until it was completely decorated. Then we made a goal of earning 100 hearts by the end of the month. 100 hearts? Heck no, I didn’t cut that many! ha! We have about 30 or so and add up the total on Sunday and start over each Monday at 0. The running totals from each week are recorded on a little notecard inside of the house. Regardless of the specific goal, there’s always a way we track our progress so we can gauge how we’re doing. Good intentions are just wishful thoughts without accountability, right? So anytime someone is caught expressing love in one form or another he or she can put a heart into our house. Likewise, anytime the opposite happens (a’hem arguing, talking back, fussing, etc) a heart is removed. We’ve been amazed at everyone’s ability to show more restraint and consciously look for ways to be more loving. After all, someone once said, “A home decorated with love is a beautiful place to be.”
