Give It To Me Straight

April 9, 2012

We’ve talked dirty hair, curly hair, and some of my favorite hair products. Now it’s time to give it to you straight: the 411 of washing and the basics for straight hair. Not sure if what I do is anything clever or special by any means… but many of you have asked. So here it is. Oh and my advanced apologies for the wonky faces during the styling segment. For whatever reason, beauty tools (particularly my newest Jose Eber favorites) seem to get the best of me!

  1. Aveda’s Scalp Benefits, the perfect shampoo that my hair never seems to get used to.
  2. Beyond the Zone Frozen Stiff Hairspray, keeps hair in place without being sticky stiff.
  3. Claw Clips, gotta have ’em to section hair when styling
  4. Paul Mitchell’s Strength, use twice monthly for an added oomph of strength & volume
  5. Jose Eber’s Infrared Blowdryer, minimizes the time spent on drying my hair from 15 min. down to 7 mins. AND… it doesn’t damage hair. You know that silky smooth feeling your hair gets after flat ironing? My hair has a similar feeling after blow drying with this baby. It’s friggin’ awe.some. For reals. Ellen thinks so too!
  6. Jose Eber’s Ceramic Flat Iron, is every bit as good as my tried and trusted CHI. In fact, I prefer it over my CHI’s nasty habit of pulling my hair. Occasionally the plates seem to snag my hair. Not the case with this hot pink pretty who also has a LIFEtime, yes I said LIFEtime warranty. Same goes for the above mentioned dryer.
  7. Aveda’s Paddle Brush, is not just a brush. And if you’re a brush snob, you’ll totally relate with me when I say not all brushes are created equal. Something about the bristles helps keep hair breakage to a minimum while also functioning as the perfect “teaser” for adding volume. No, I don’t tease with a comb, friends. That would result in a serious case of rats nest. Not cute. Or healthy for the hair.
  8. Want to try Jose Eber’s tools for yourself? They’re giving Pink Pistachio readers 20% OFF using code: PISTACHIO20 at checkout!

Shampoo & Condition
Lather up your shampoo in your hands before massaging it into your hair. WHY? If you put directly into your hair, and THEN lather…you’re creating unnecessary frizz, breakage, and added build-up. The water can’t wash away the shampoo when it’s in such a concentrated form (thus the build-up). Rinse. Condition from roots to ends (yes, even the roots). Let sit and before rinsing, lather more shampoo into your roots only, before rinsing both condition and shampoo away with cold water (sealing the hair follicle).

After The Wash
Run a brush through your mane, upside down, from end to roots. Ring out the excess water. Wrap a towel around it and let it rest on top of your noggin’. CAUTION: DO NOT FALL TO THE TEMPTATION TO RUB DRY!!! One, you’re not a dog. Two, you’ll only add extra frizz and breakage! No, no, NO! Behave already.

The Blow Dry
Remove the towel upside down. Whhaaat? Yes, bend over. Look at your cute lil’ toesies for the next 7-10 minutes and try not to pass out. DO NOT USE A BRUSH to smooth out the kinks from the towel. Just leave it be. Blow completely dry on high, hot, heat… ONLY USING FINGERS if moving the hair around is necessary. Once COMPLETELY dry (damp is not dry. don’t cheat, or your hair will be flat) flip your hair back. You should now be standing right side up and your mane will be wildness! This is a good sign.

Um…hi bloodrush?

Turn your blow dryer to the coldest setting on high. Use your fingers to pull your hair straight up towards the ceiling while concentrating the cold air at the roots. Got the pic? Lifting the hair, while blasting the roots with “cold shots”. Do this all over the crown and sides of your head.

Your hair should now be even more WiLd!!! RAWR!! You’re doin’ it right…TRUST ME!

Ironing
Pretend you’re pulling your hair back into a ponytail using a claw clip. Leave a little of the underneath and flat iron it. Start about 2 inches away from the roots. By ironing at the base of the roots, you’re deflating all of your hard work! Now, wouldn’t that be a shame. Work your way up, letting more hair down each time. You should end up with a lil’ ponytail just for the crown.

Now The Crown: Start from the back and work to the front (forehead). I take small sections and flatiron straight up towards the ceiling (remember, we’re not gettin’ the bad boy iron anywhere near the roots). Don’t worry about your “part”. This comes later. You’re working from the back forward, straight up the center (Have I lost you? Maybe a video tutorial would’ve been helpful?)…

The Spray
Teasing, isn’t just for the 80’s. Yet another confession: I tease. And so will you in 3 sections: crown, right side, & left side. Take the back section of your crown and slightly tease using a paddle brush. NO FINE TOOTH COMBS ALLOWED! Lightly spray at the roots. Repeat the “light” teasing on the left and right sides of your crown. Again, spraying at the roots afterwards.

The Part
Using a comb to part is only reserved for elderly grandpas in adorable suspenders. We use fingers. We’re not creating a clean line, unless doing what my loverbuns calls, “the booty crack” straight up the center. Center parts are cute for the right looks, but for side parts – we use the fingers! With one hand on each side of the location of the desire part, pretend you’re digging for buried treasure by brushing hair out of the way. It will create a more natural look. Turning the finger into a pointer is not the objective…might as well bust out the comb! Buried treasure…is the key! Use a light all-over-go-around with the spray. If you experiment with keeping your fingers in your roots while you spray, you’ll create depth and “pieciness”.

You should now look so gorgeous that your mirror gets jealous!

And one more wonky face just in case you didn’t get enough…
Happy Monday, friendlies!

  • Anna @ The Guiltless Life April 9, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Yes! It’s the teasing! So important. I have really thick hair so without that, a few hours after straightening it just looks really lifeless and heavy. Thanks for the tutorial Missy!

  • Tricia April 9, 2012 at 4:42 pm

How long does that discount last? I am DROOLING over that hairdryer. My naturally curly hair is my enemy when it comes to blow drying my hair straight without frizz. Got some other expenses coming up, so want to wait a tiny bit on it if I can.

    • missy April 11, 2012 at 1:33 pm

They said it should last a few months! Woo stinkin’ hoo!!!

  • Amy Mendoza April 9, 2012 at 5:34 pm

Thanks so much for the Jose Eber love Melissa! Your hair looks amazing:)
Tricia: the coupon code will last for several months!

  • Natalie April 9, 2012 at 6:29 pm

Oooh Love the tutorial! Makes me want to go fix my hair right now. Thanx for the tutorial! I’m going to give it a try, right now. 🙂

  • Jennifer April 9, 2012 at 6:57 pm

Love this tutorial. Gonna work out and then try it.

I tried to order the blow drier and use the code PISTACHIO20, and it said it was invalid or expired. 🙁 Any tips?

    Thanks again!

    • missy April 11, 2012 at 1:33 pm

contacted them and the code is now working properly! can not wait to hear how you like your new dryer! It’s awe.some!

  • Megan April 9, 2012 at 9:41 pm

I’ve been looking for a new blowdryer and flat iron! Where did you purchase?

    • missy April 11, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Click any of the bolded items and it’ll bring you to the website! xo or you can go to joseeberhair.com

  • Ashley April 10, 2012 at 1:42 am

My hubby and I joke that I look like I belong in an 80’s hair band after I blow dry!! I never knew the importance of a brush… Must look into that one.

  • Jamie Smith April 11, 2012 at 2:44 am

This is a life changer 🙂 Love it!!

  • Jessica May 18, 2012 at 2:59 pm

Just did it and my hair turned out great! The bit about not straightening the roots made me slap my forehead and say “DUH!!” Funny how the little things really do make a huge difference!

  • Julie May 18, 2012 at 8:58 pm

This has sold me on the infrared blow dryer. I have been shopping around for it and trying to find consumer reviews (which I can find none of for some reason). I am just a little confused by the wide variety of prices I’m seeing. Folica.com has it for $229.95. Your link lists it for $149 and there are multiple different Jose Eber sites with it listed up to $400. Are these all the same dryer? I’m just a little worried I may be buying a fake or getting scammed or something. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • Liz May 18, 2012 at 11:23 pm

A question about the Paul Mitchell Strength – were you meaning the shampoo/conditioner or the treatment product?

  • Ashleigh May 20, 2012 at 12:02 am

Thank you so much for this! I’m in need of both and just bought the straightener and blowdryer. The discount brought my total from $274 to $219, and I got free shipping. Thank you!!! Off to buy the brush now. *…Must step away from Pinterest…*

  • Andrea May 26, 2012 at 11:58 am

Okay. Where have you been all my life? This is by far the best advice that worked like a charm for my fine hair. Keep me coming!

  • Kelly May 28, 2012 at 7:34 pm

I just stumbled upon this blog post via Pinterest. I will admit I was a little skeptical about blow drying my hair upside down (without a brush), not ironing the roots, etc, however this turned out SO fabulous I think I will keep doing my hair this way! (My hair is so thick that blow-drying and straightening is usually a 1.5-2 hour process so you can understand why I’d be so skeptical.) 😉

I’m going to take a picture each month and repost about how well my hair breakage is recovering! Thanks so much for the tips!!!

  • Kate May 29, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Just did this to my hair and it’s awesome!! I have long thick hair and this made it manageable! I do have one quick question… I have short side swept bangs… How would you style them and at what point? I followed exactly and they are a little wild still at the end but I don’t want to flat iron them and lose all their volume!

  • danielle May 30, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Tried this this morning and… Wow. I have to admit I was skeptical that anything could breathe life into my lame locks, but I am blown away – thanks!

  • Brittany May 30, 2012 at 9:57 pm

I Love this! I flat iron my hair and hate how “flat” it really can get. Of course I did not look anywhere near as glamorous as you doing this..but it worked 🙂 Thanks for sharing. I love your blog and shared you on mine for others!

{Finding your blog is why I love Pinterest.} Ok, so I’m prego & for me this means extra-oily hair. UGH! I read this post this morning, and followed your tips for washing, drying & styling. I just have to say, you’ve changed my life. I think it was the extra shampoo while conditioning that made my hair extra happy. My hair is super thick, BIG & long, and thanks to your advice, it looks hot instead of being a hot mess. I just want to give you a hug.

From a straight-haired girl who always had to choose between curling my hair or having a bad hair day, thank you htank you thank you! my hair look great!
Question, what’s the story on your hair color? ( i love it!)

  • Sabreana June 1, 2012 at 11:39 am

I have been trying to figure out how to add volume to my very flat hair. I tried this today, hoping it lasts! Thanks for the post!!

    Xoxo

  • LeeAnna June 2, 2012 at 8:34 pm

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I just moved from Utah to a very humid state and my hair is having a fit! It is always oily and flat now. So I just did my hair this way and it is SO amazing! And I went out and bought me some of that dry shampoo–LOVE. Thank you for saving me from nasty hair from nasty humidity!

    • Dyana January 14, 2014 at 1:59 pm

Humid? Utah? This is laughable. Trust me. I have lived in Utah. You have not seen humid until you move to the south. =)

    • D June 30, 2014 at 2:39 am

She moved FROM Utah TO a humid state.
I feel for ya LeeAnna! 😉

  • Caroline June 3, 2012 at 2:51 am

You are the best thing to ever happen to my stubbornly straight, volume lacking, fine and breakable locks. Thank God I found this on Pinterest! Thanks so much!

  • laura w June 3, 2012 at 4:00 am

I love your blog!! Any tips on starting one? I have no clue but would love to.
    thx

  • Emily June 3, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Okay I’m a little confused. HOw exactly do u brush your hair from ends to roots? Isn’t that backwards? Help please!!

    • Cassie June 5, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I think what she means is to start at the ends and work your way to the roots. This way any snarls or tangles don’t all get moved down to the bottom of your hair to get worked on at once. It makes a HUGE difference in breakage. And it’s a better way to brush little girls hair too when it goes WILD because it hurts less.

  • Jenny June 4, 2012 at 6:04 am

I tried this tutorial and it worked!!! I have what I consider the world’s most difficult hair—wavy, fine and hard to manage. I blow dry it after every wash but have never felt it looks just right. Well, this tutorial was a miracle find. Thank you so much!

  • Nina June 4, 2012 at 2:55 pm

Thank you!! This actually works on my very fine, flat hair! Yay!

  • Marisol June 6, 2012 at 3:15 am

I tried it this morning & OMG I am extremely happy with the result! First of all, it only took me around 20-30 minutes to do my hair! Secondly, it lasted all day! And finally, I will continue to do this on a regular basis! The next thing to try is the dry shampoo & the soft curls 🙂

  • corrie June 11, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I was skeptical that this would work for me but after reading all the comments from people with fine flat hair, I gave it a try. Unfortunately, this technique doesn’t really work on short hair. I love the blog though…any tips for short hair that needs a boost?

  • Katie June 13, 2012 at 9:07 pm

These tips were great! I have the flattest hair in the world and when I was done I actually had a lot of volume! Thanks for the awesome and detailed tutorial!

  • Melanie Rayburn June 19, 2012 at 5:24 am

Ok, found this on pintrest and decided to check it out. I have very thick hair and it’s wavy/curly also frizzes alot since I live in Texas. Any extra tips? Thanks for the advice. i always straighten my roots, so thanks for stopping me!

  • Jamie June 19, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I AM HAVING THE BEST HAIR DAY EVER!!! Thanks. 🙂

  • Melanie Rayburn June 19, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Ok. i just used these tips and it got my hair really straight but now its frizzy/static whenever i straighten it. know anything that can help?

  • Rita June 20, 2012 at 3:01 am

I shower at night mostly after working out. Should I do the the whole process or just the drying part at night?

  • Beth June 23, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Awesome tuturial! Do you use anything to prevent heat damage from the flat iron? Like a heat protectant? I didn’t see that in the products you listed. Just wondering! Thanks!

  • Hayley July 5, 2012 at 1:23 pm

You are ridiculously helpful! I have very fine hair, so after a few hours of straightening, my hair usually looks so limp and sad. I always thought teasing was a big no-no, but I’ve just never been doing it the right way! Thank you for your advice!

  • Leah July 14, 2012 at 3:46 am

Okay, so I totally love every single thing about you! I spend hours on your site and read EVERYTHING! (Which is completely worth it!) You are beautiful, dollface! I absolutely love Pink Pistachio! You dress adorable, you’re hair is oh so fabulous, and your just overall amazing! Haha. Love youuuu! 🙂

  • Cali July 15, 2012 at 6:07 am

This is great but would be sooo much better as a video! PLEASE do a video!!

  • Hilary July 15, 2012 at 9:02 pm

    Hilarious! Love.

  • Lydia Grace July 17, 2012 at 10:04 am

Oh my! I just stumbled across your blog and I’m in love! Thank you for posting! Will definitely be adding to my blog reader!

  • Nikki July 17, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I loooove this tutorial!! My hair always has this natural wave by the end of the day regardless of the straightening I do with my iron. I never thought to blow dry just the roots with the cold air to seal them. I was just doing cold all over. What a difference the concentration on the roots brings! Brilliant!

  • Donna July 18, 2012 at 3:12 am

Wondered if you have ever tried Living Proof No Frizz Straight Making Creme? I have been using it for about a year or so (sephora) and can’t go without during the humid summer months and rainy fall days. I have crazy difficult hair. I have average thickness but a lot of hair so I tend to keep a short cut to save time on styling. It’s kinky curly and crazy without this stuff but its a life saver.

  • Julie July 18, 2012 at 4:23 am

Why wouldn’t you use infared flat iron too?

  • Kait July 18, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I found you on pinterest and I just tried this and my hair looks AWESOME! Thanks so much for the tips! My hair is very thick and straight and always flat, but after reading this it looks so much better!! 🙂

  • Haley July 18, 2012 at 9:39 pm

so I don’t brush my hair at any point?

    • Hope October 3, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Thats exactly what i thought. But then i re read it. After you take the towel off, before you start blow drying. Upside down.

  • sara July 20, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Eh…this is ok. Love the part about using a little shampoo to rinse the conditioner. However, I have a cowlick and the whole “no brush’ idea made it dry funny. Everyone else seems to like the post though, so that’s good. I’m just too ugly to use it I guess! Thanks anyway.

    • Breah November 28, 2012 at 2:04 am

Sara, I was thinking the same thing after I tried this! I have a cowlick surrounding my head about three inches from the crown and blow drying without a round brush made me look like a chia pet with volume in ALL the wrong places. Some ladies are born with easier hair to deal with, and we are not them! xoxo

  • Adrien July 20, 2012 at 5:23 pm

This is awesome ! I use it every time I wash my hair !! But what would you do for cowlicks in the front of the part ? Thanks !

  • Steph July 24, 2012 at 5:03 pm

This tutorial is AMAZING. I never knew I’d been “deflating” all my hard work when I started the flat iron at the roots. Thanks so much for showing me the error of my ways. You’re fabulous.

    ~Steph

  • Jessica July 27, 2012 at 2:53 pm

Just discovered your blog and am obsessed with all of your helpful tips!!

Question- I have thick, wavy hair that tends to get puffy and frizzy. Should I still try the upside down blow dry? I’m worried I might have TOO much volume.

    Thanks!!

  • Chloe August 6, 2012 at 5:19 am

Your blog is awesome. Well done on being adorable and informative 🙂

  • Maureen August 6, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Very easy to follow and my hair looks great!

  • Sheri August 10, 2012 at 1:06 am

Found this on Pinterest today so with much skepticism I decided to give it a try. WOW!!! The results were amazing! I have very thick, curly hair and I have never been able to get any height at my crown. Surprise! It worked! I will never do my hair any other way! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  • Lanie August 13, 2012 at 8:41 pm

in the after the wash section did you mean brush from roots to end??????tried to brush from end to roots and just created a mess!!!!!!!! =(

    • Mandy August 20, 2012 at 3:52 am

Just brush out while you are upside down;)

  • Lanie August 13, 2012 at 9:20 pm

I am in love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am so doing this for the first day of school!~!!!

  • Sam August 16, 2012 at 2:05 am

Just ordered my hairdryer. THANKS! 🙂

  • Shirley August 20, 2012 at 11:31 pm

I have pretty wavy hair so I was skeptical about trying this …… but all I can say is YAY! My hair looks fabulous! Thanks for posting!

  • Kate August 22, 2012 at 2:54 pm

looks awesome!! My hair never looks that good when I straighten it.. I will have to try it your way and see if that works better for me! 🙂

  • Chelsea August 22, 2012 at 2:55 pm

BEAUTIFUL!! 🙂 I use the same shampoo and love it!

  • Sonja Szerlag August 23, 2012 at 3:29 am

Stumbled upon your adorable blog from pintrest! I tried this for date night last week and my boyfriend actually noticed I did something different with my hair and went on about how nice I looked. Coming from the man who wouldn’t notice if I shaved my head I was thrilled! I passed your blog and this post along to my sister who is in love with doing her hair like this now too!

    Thank you thank you!

  • Alyssa August 24, 2012 at 3:51 am

Love this! I hated how flat my hair would get when straight ironing and now I know why!!

I did use heat protectant before blowdrying, Garnier bamboo hairspray, and finished with a shine spray but followed everything else exactly and my hair looks great! Another mom at baseball practice even used the word “glamorous” lol.

Can’t wait to try your curl tutorial next.

  • Ava August 26, 2012 at 10:42 am

Thank you soo much! This is exactly what I needed for my hair. Love the tip about not ironing the roots. Thanks!

  • Michelle August 29, 2012 at 4:53 am

Love your site! Just had a few questions about this- do you use any product before blowdrying? Volume spray/moose/heat treatment? Also once finished the back combing do you brush out the top so you don’t look all crazy? I would love to see a video on your process. I need all the help I can get;)

  • Amber August 31, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Bummed you didn’t have a finished product picture! But loved the tutorial, and will be trying it! 🙂

  • Laurel September 1, 2012 at 6:35 pm

You. Are. Uh. Ma. ZING! Found you on Pinterest…never before has someone made me want to go wash and blow dry my hair RIGHT NOW. And it’s a Saturday! Also love the fact that you are a fellow mom so you truly understand the trials and tribulations of showering vs. sleeping an extra 20 min. Xoxo!

  • Kimber September 5, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! Thank you so much hair looks great and I’m excited to see how it holds up for the day! I feel that I’ve achieved Salon style perfection!

  • Courtney September 26, 2012 at 4:46 am

Honestly, you are a God send… I’ve been trying for YEARS to achieve these results. My hair is so fine (but I have a lot of it) and it’s stick straight…but since I’ve surpassed my mid-twenties, it’s been a frizz ball. My two choices (before now) were moderately curly (achieved by spiral curling my hair and waiting 10 minutes for it to fall out) or stick, flat, straight. Having this kind of volume (so easily) is so different for my hair, that the roots actually are sore right now when I move the hair around. Sounds weird and hard to explain, but if you’ve ever had your hair in a ponytail for too many hours then you know what I mean… you are AH-MA-ZING

  • Becky September 27, 2012 at 1:00 pm

OMG I tried this, this morning and my hair has never looked this good!!!! I was actually finished doing my hair in less time then before!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this it has changed my hair styling for the better!!!

  • Suzanne Walker September 27, 2012 at 6:53 pm

Omg!!! I’ve never been able to get my hair to look this good!! Absolutely love it! And its so easy, thank you for sharing!!=)

  • Amanda Fields October 4, 2012 at 12:57 pm

Do you know if that shampoo and conditioner are good for dry and damaged hair? My hair is fried on the ends from going back and forth with color and bleach, so I need something to strengthen it and make it as gorgeous as yours is! 🙂 Thanks!

    • missy October 5, 2012 at 12:39 am

I’d HIGHLY recommend, Aveda’s damage remedy. In the same line they have an even more intensive conditioner you use once a week. At one point, I used this to repair my hair and it did wonders. Also be sure to check out the dry shampoo post. Washing your hair less frequently will also help. 🙂

  • ClaraDarling October 5, 2012 at 4:56 am

I tease my hair every day! And have for the past 3-4 yearss I saw where you said NOT to use a fine tooth comb. I am guilty as charged!! Would you mind telling me why I shouldn’t use it? Am I killing my hair or does it make too tight of a tease? Just curious since I’ve been using it so long. OOPS! 😉

  • lisa October 12, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Love your blog! What size is the flat iron that you have- the 1 inch or the 1.25? thanks

  • kate October 15, 2012 at 4:23 am

Hi – found your blog through pinterest and I love it! My question – I have wavy/curly hair (kinda beachy looking), and I have no problem straightening it. Now that I’m in LA, where it’s humid, right when I get outside gets a bit fluffy and waves at the end. How can I keep it like I style it? I use a Sedu straightener. Thanks!

  • M B October 17, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Please please do a video tutorial!

  • Emily October 21, 2012 at 2:42 pm

Let me first say, you are fabulous and I appreciate all of your ideas & advice. I just tried blow drying and straightening my hair as you did in this tutorial…it worked really well. Did not take very long either! I have been using a round brush to dry my hair for YEARS!! Maybe I can retire it! I will be visiting your blog again and again:)

  • Dee October 27, 2012 at 12:39 am

Any way you can do a video tutorial on this? I learn better by seeing. Thanks for all of your tutorials!

  • Shelli Myers November 7, 2012 at 6:20 pm

I Love so many things on your website. Can you please do a video of this?

Thank you for all the information you provide.

  • Brea November 12, 2012 at 12:29 pm

So I tried this method this morning before work and my mirror is SUPER jealous 🙂 I love this technique and will be using this all the time when I straighten my hair. I have really thick hair so it is hard for me to get volume that is noticeable. I am looking forward to exploring more on your site and finding other helpful hints/suggestions. Thanks for helping me look fabulous today!

  • Susan November 22, 2012 at 5:27 pm

So between the drying completely with cold shots at the roots and the ironing, do you comb it at all? Because my hair gets really tangled while I’m blowdrying it and ironing tangled up hair is a little difficult.

I have always had the hardest time styling my very thin, straight hair. I usually do nothing with it and it hangs pretty limp. I tried your method once and WOW! My hair looks great, so much volume when I do it this way. Thanks so much for sharing this, it was really helpful.

Is there any way to do this without flat ironing my hair? Thank you! Your site is wonderful! I’ll definitely be using it in the future!

Do you have any solutions for dry, damaged hair that keeps falling out? My hair is always in a pony tail, do you have anything that will repair my hair after I take my pony tail out!

My favorite products for damaged hair are by Aveda – Damage Remedy line. They work wonders!

I tried this earlier this week and it blew me away! It all seemed so basic, but I followed it exactly as you said and my hair has never looked better 🙂

Going to my local Aveda store tomorrow to check out the shampoo and conditioners you’ve suggested. I have VERY thin hair, so anything to stop more breakage is very helpful to me. Thank you thank you!!!

I have really fine limp hair and use gel to give my hair some structure and hold. I blow dry upside down but I use a comb so the gel doesnt harden. I will definitely be doing the cold shot and teasing idea as well as a more natural part! luckily my limp hair is already stick straight and doesnt need anymore work.I just needed the volume tips. Thanks!

Hi! So I tried this tutorial and everything turned out great except the teasing part! I tried to do it in the three sections but I do not think I was doing it correctly. Can you elaborate on the steps for teasing?I know you can also use it for ponytails and other styles but I have never been able to figure it out.I need as much volume as I can get!

Love all your tutorials by the way!

I just started washing my hair like this and it has changed my life!!!!!!! It’s no longer greasy or frizzy and gave my flat hair tons of volume! It’s light and fluffy and clean. I would have never thought to wash my hair like this, thank you so much! It’s made such a big difference

Soooo … No product pre-blow dry? Just blowing naked, clean hair? LOL

  • Kelsey Apley March 27, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Thanks for sharing!!! I always blow dry my hair bent over, but didn’t do it with the flat iron that way! Good to know!

  • Sarah May 5, 2013 at 12:36 pm

I just tried this technique. Halfway through I was thinking “Yeah, no, this is no good for frizz-prone hair…” but then at the end, voila! Soft, frizz-free hair. And I love your hair-washing technique. I think that’s going to be how I wash from now on. I did add some heat protection product before blowing drying. Just wanted to say thanks!

It didn’t work on my thick heavy hair 🙁 But I do like the technique. I’ll do this from now on instead of the way I’ve been doing for years.

Will this work for short hair? Currently my hair is flat and lifeless and needs help.

    • missy January 12, 2014 at 8:33 pm

Yes, most definitely! The same techniques work on any length!

  • Kate March 1, 2014 at 5:20 pm

    Amazing tutorial.

Love that you didn’t use any hair product before drying it.
It really changed my hair styling technique

I will definitely be trying this. Thank you for the advice. I know there will be one problem for me. My hair is curliest at the root. Even my hair dresser complains about how stubborn it is. Any tips?

  • Birdy December 27, 2014 at 8:46 pm

I was enchanted with the idea of finally getting my straight hair to be voluminous without damage, but this didn’t work for me. :(( I followed the tutorial but i saw no difference between normally blow drying my hair–which gives me volume that falls out half way through the day–and following this process. It’s probably because of my fine hair however; i think the conditioner weighed it down and made it greasy faster.

My hair is so dry at the ends, even within a week of getting my haircut. Suggestions? Thanks

  • Karen April 10, 2015 at 1:04 am

I might just be confused. Do you only shampoo and then condition once each per shower? The way it reads, it sounds like you are shampooing before and then again after you condition.

    • missy August 12, 2015 at 10:08 pm

Yes, that is correct. Shampoo once, condition, and then shampoo again (just the roots).

Hi! I know this is from a LONG time ago, but do you know if they still sell the straightener and/or blow dryer? They sound amazing and the links are broken!! Thanks so much!

  • Shirley Howald April 3, 2016 at 6:30 am

I stumbled on this tonight. I am a ‘throw back 80’s volume’ junkie and I use a comb and constantly complain to my stylist that my hair won’t hold volume. I just got it cut shorter again today and textured to help it hold. I wish I had read this post this morning. I can’t WAIT to try this and yes, I will trade in my comb for a brush – Eeek so excited!

  • Brittlyn September 11, 2016 at 3:37 am

I haven’t tried this yet, but I am one of those people with a straight side part because I have side bangs. No one else seems to have asked what if you have bangs that needs to be styled as well? I hoping this works for my fine/thin hair!

  • Shafia Zahin September 16, 2017 at 8:59 am

Hi,can I use rolling brush instead when ironing or teasing?
