Dirty (Hair) Secrets

February 20, 2012

It’s no secret that at times our hair resembles Mr. Grease Lightning’s fugly twin. You know the look. Slick-nasty. Being totally frank, sometimes it’s the snooze button’s fault, or screaming kidlets, or sheer laziness that prevents us from the shower. In my case, my mop visits every Tuesday and Friday. Oh hush it! I just heard about 10 of you at once gasp in horror. It’s true! Hair can actually be trained to get dirty less often.

Just hear me out and take notes…

Why Does Hair Get Greasy?

Where does your hair rank on the dirty scale? Well, that all depends on the amount of oil your body produces. Some of us are well-oiled machines (and NOT in a good way). The good news? We can tell our oil factory to pipe-it-down a notch by simply washing our hair less. You see, when the oil stays on the hair it sends the message, “She’s good and slick already. Tell the guys below she doesn’t need another dousing.” So naturally (by our own oil) moisturized hair tells oil glands to slow down. Simply put? Hair that’s washed everyday isn’t retaining moisture on it’s own (because you’re washing it away). That raises the white flag of “dry” despair and oil comes in to to the rescue. Just who we DIDN’T want to show up to save the day, right?

What Can I Do About It?

Wash it less. If you’re a daily washer, start by washing every other day. If you wash every other day, stretch it out to two days. It took time; but I can go without washing every 3-5 days. I know you’re all saying, “Um…gross. I still have to go out in public. And no. A hat ISN’T an option.” Ladies, I COMPLETELY understand. Go ahead and exhale any anxiety you’re holding in. Because, here’s where our little friend, Dry SHHampoo comes into the picture (with the added emphasis on SHHH because no one needs to know you DIDN’T wash that morning. It can be YOUR little secret). And just as you pay attention to your hair, don’t forget the importance of Complete Beard and Hair Care. Men, much like women, can benefit from a grooming routine that includes quality products for both facial hair and the hair on their heads. It’s a holistic approach to self-care, ensuring that every aspect of your personal style is well-nurtured and maintained, leaving you looking and feeling your best. So, whether it’s managing the days between washes or ensuring complete care for your hair and beard, these little tricks add up to a confident and well-groomed you.

Does Having Oily Hair Affect Hair Growth?

Having oily hair does not directly affect hair growth, but it can contribute to hair loss in some cases. However, using dry shampoo can help absorb excess oil without having to wash your hair as FREQUENTLY. If you are still worried about the scalp, when it is EXCESSIVELY OILY, it will lead to lots of hair loss. Then the solution for this problem is Minoxidil. You can use Minoxidil from numan which can help to stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and promoting a healthy scalp environment, especially for men. If you are experiencing hair loss, it may be worth trying minoxidil to see if it can help.

What Should I Do If I Experience Excessive Hair Loss?

Experiencing excessive hair loss can indeed be worrisome. If you notice a significant increase in hair fall, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional or a dermatologist promptly. They can conduct a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying cause, which might stem from various factors such as hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or stress. Root Hair Institute is a reputable facility known for its expertise in addressing hair loss concerns. Early intervention and proper treatment, which might include personalized therapies or medical interventions, can often effectively address the issue and promote healthy hair growth. These procedures, conducted by skilled professionals, can offer a lasting solution to hair loss, providing natural-looking results and boosting confidence in individuals dealing with hair thinning or baldness.

What IS Dry Shampoo?

It’s sweet merciful magic in a can. The magic is a spray-on form of powder that’s applied to the roots of your hair. When applied it “masks” existing oil that’s already on your hair by giving it a matte appearance. Here’s the kicker! You ready? It’s not taking AWAY the oil itself, just the sheen oil gives. So that fooled oil factory never gets the memo to produce MORE oil. See? Your hair is staying naturally moisturized by the oil but looks clean.

When Should I Use It?

Okay. I hope you’re all still with me. It seems only logical to use dry shampoo when your hair is dirty, right? Well, I apply it even when my hair is clean! Maybe too obsessed? I beg to differ. I’ve noticed when I apply the dry shampoo to clean roots, then any oil that may sneak in later gets soaked up by the powder that’s already waiting its arrival. Booyah! That oil won’t even know what hit it. Obviously, you also want to apply it between washes when your hair isn’t looking it’s hottest.

How Do I Apply It?

A little actually goes a long way. You’ll know if you’ve overdone it because the white haired grandma staring back at you in the mirror will say so! I concentrate on the crown of my head (from my ears upward). You’ll want to spray lightly at the roots by lifting it up in sections. Continue to lift in sections while spraying. Once you’ve covered the whole crown let the powder sit for a bit. It needs some time to work its magic. I like to do my makeup at this point (or maybe you’d prefer singing a little song to pass the time… who knows). Now comes the time to blend it. Use your fingertips to shake your hair around at the roots. This helps disperse the powder evenly without it falling out. Using a brush will make too much of the powder fall out.

What Are The Perks?
The way I see it there are three: 1) healthier hair from not washing daily 2) saves time 3) more body/texture to your style

What Brand Should I Buy?
It’s not necessary to buy overly priced powder. The higher the price tag doesn’t necessarily equal better results. I use Beyond the Zone and it can be purchased at your local Sally Beauty Supply store.

  • Kellee February 20, 2012 at 11:24 am

I got a can for Christmas and have been meaning to ask you how this whole shabam us done properly. Thank you!!!

  • Maggie February 20, 2012 at 1:06 pm

I recently bought Oscar Blandi (the brown can) from Sephora. It’s about $20 but the main reason I was willing to spend so much is because I’m not a fan of the smell of some brands. This one has a light lemon scent (think lemon creme, not lemon cleaner), and the best part is you don’t smell it after it is on your hair! Any miracle secrets for dry, itchy, and dare I say, flaky scalp?

    • Sandi August 5, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Maggie, to answer your last question….YES! I tried every brand you can think of and nothing worked until I did a search online and found Nizoral. You use to be able to get it at Target, Walmart, Publix, etc., but they’ve pulled it from the shelf for some reason. I now get it at Walgreens or CVS w/o a perscription. And yes, it’s like a miracle! 🙂

  • Nina February 20, 2012 at 2:05 pm

YES!!! I am a fan of the dirty hair and notice how much better my hair looks and feels. I’m always looking for new dry shampoos to try- I have yet to find one that I love. Going to pick up this little gem you recommended today!

    • mj May 30, 2012 at 3:27 pm

try faux dry from a company called blow…they are newer…if theres a beauty brands in your area you can buy it there or on their website…Its the first one I have ever found that I actually like in my hair. My hair is super fine and gets super greasy really easy and its important to me that my hair feel clean..this one actually does that

  • Sue February 20, 2012 at 2:19 pm

YES!! I’ve been waiting for this post. 🙂 I currently wash about every 2 days, but can’t wait to live on the edge and go longer between washes.I have super thick hair, and it falls out like CRAZY every time I wash it, so less washing makes me happier. Thanks!

  • elizabeth February 20, 2012 at 2:39 pm

my hair stylist encourages me to do this and I see the benefit, but what about days when you work out? For me, that is pretty often. I get sweaty and makes me feel gross to not lather up my head. Know what I mean?

    • Sarah May 31, 2012 at 5:50 am

On the days you workout and you get really sweaty take a shower like you normally would but don’t use shampoo or conditioner the water will rinse away the sweat and then you can blow dry your hair and use the dry shampoo … But if you feel that your hair doesn’t feel clean then I would use shampoo and conditioner… The key to dry shampoo is to not use a lot the more you use the greaser your hair feels atleast mine does anyways.. I’ve tried tresemme dry shampoo I used it once and didn’t really like it.

    • eas April 5, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I just have to say, I tried Tresemme also the first time I tried dry shampoo and I hated it. It left my hair feeling so gross! Believe it or not, the second one I tried with much more success was Suave because I had a coupon that made it free. I liked it a lot more, but I am still planning to try some others from the local Sally store.

  • Lyndsey Perez February 20, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Getting up at 5 am for work at 610, working 12+ hr days, and sometimes gym after, and sometimes just not home till 10 doesn’t equal lots of time for daily showers. Nor do I want to get up any earlier then 5 am! Just used dry shampoo this morning! It really is a life saver! And I agree my hair is not as oily the less I am washing it now! I usually take baths at night versus a shower so I can soak, relax, and get clean!

  • Tiffany February 20, 2012 at 3:12 pm

I think dry shampoo is the best thing ever!!! I don’t think you’re overly obsessed for using it on clean hair. Adds sooooo much texture!

  • Kaleigh February 20, 2012 at 3:28 pm

Ok first off, hi hello you are cracking me up here! Secondly, yes yes and YES! Dry shampoo is the best thing ever invented, it even trumps sliced bread. I’ve tried a bajillion different kinds, and the Beyond the Zone brand is still one of my faves! 🙂

  • Marina February 20, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Ok, so just bought Klorane Extra Gentle Dry shampoo from Folica.com. Hopefully it will be good…based on review seems it should. I have been questioning the use of dry shampoo and if it really does work. You inspired me to go ahead and take the “plunge”. Hoping it will work!

  • Kristina February 20, 2012 at 4:23 pm

I LOVE dry shampoo!!!! LOVE it! 🙂 I’ll be honest, I have used it on my clean hair too! It’s also really great when you style your hair, or use anti-frizz protection and say…put a little bit too much on, problem fixed.

  • Tina February 20, 2012 at 4:30 pm

I’ve been meaning to try this for a while now. Seems like another benefit would be that your hair color would last longer before looking faded. ??

  • Anna @ The Guiltless Life February 20, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Oh I just love dry shampoo! I also find it kind of fascinating how much my hair changes depending on what kind of water I’m showering under – as in, where in the world I am. Hard vs soft water makes such a big difference!

  • Jamie Ogletree February 20, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Dry Shampoo is my best friend! I wash my hair at the most every 5 days, so dry shampoo has been a real life saver.

  • stephanie February 20, 2012 at 4:55 pm

I’m excited to try this! I’ve always wantes to use it. Any suggestions for those in the military that have to use lots of hairspray everyday? Does anyone know if it helps with that too? Thanks!!

    • mj May 30, 2012 at 3:30 pm

dry shampoo doesnt actually clean the hair it just absorbs the oil… try using a good flexible/workable hold spray maybe?

  • Carrie B February 20, 2012 at 7:02 pm

I love the smell of the Beyond the Zone dry shampoo-I had been using Suave dry Shampoo but wasn’t really a fan of the smell and the staying power. Thanks for the tip!

  • Sara Flynn February 20, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Thanks for the tip! I just recently bought dry this winter because we had a little problem with hot water… I bought a brand and not to fond of it but see how other brands could be better.

    Thanks! Sara

  • Serena February 21, 2012 at 12:30 am

Love dry shampoo! Use it for in between washes and extra volume when styling. Don’t know how I Lived without it before. Great wrap up 🙂

  • Kimberly February 21, 2012 at 1:26 am

Will have to try out your tips for the dry shampoo. I have dark hair so past experiences have left me with some white roots. Also what is that beautiful pink polish you are wearing? I am always on the lookout for great colors!

    • mj May 30, 2012 at 3:31 pm

usually that means youre using a little too much…many times if you hit it with the blow dryer it helps

  • kimberly February 21, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Thanks for the tip! Will have to try this brand of dry shampoo. Also, what pink polish are you wearing in the picture? I am always on the lookout for the perfect pink polish for a mani and pedi!

    • missy February 22, 2012 at 2:33 am

The polish is gelish’s “pink smoothie” it’s the perfect baby pink. Remember the gel nail post I did awhile back? I purchased it from Esther’s Nail Center (see link in the post). 🙂

  • Jjanga February 21, 2012 at 5:17 pm

I just purchased some of Dove’s new dry shampoo and I wanted to warn all that it has a very strong smell and according to many people it looks like I still have snow/dandruff in my hair. It was very bad….

  • Kerry February 21, 2012 at 6:43 pm

The best product out now is cheap and all natural (I couldn’t believe it either). The smell is DEVINE, like lemons, limes and grapefriut ~ I’m not kidding!! It’s from LUSH and it’s a powder, so the same but without the harmful carbons, but you control the amount and it will last forever. The product name is No Drought, check it out http://www.lush.com/shop/products/hair/solid-shampoos/no-drought

  • Natalie February 22, 2012 at 3:35 am

Okay it’s time for me to get on board the dry shampoo train I guess! It sounds like it’s working miracles for everyone and I can’t go more than 3 days without washing so as gross as it sounds I have heard a million times the longer you go the better for your hair so here it goes! 🙂 Great post thanx!

  • Jenny February 22, 2012 at 6:25 am

Dry shampoo could possibly be my favorite invention ever! Seriously, I don’t know how I lived without it before!

  • Lilli Toby February 22, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I love dry shampoo discovered it a few years ago. I have baby fine thin blond hair, it is dry and can be an oily scalp the next day depending on how many products I have put in. I have only tried one brand Oscar Blandi I use two from his line. I have yet to venture out and try new ones. Ill have to look into your brand. Thanks so much for your post, I love your blog it is so cute. I’m new to the world of blogging and have recently been trying my hand at it, I feel I’m in a constant state of “how can I make this work & constantly changing things”. Take care.

  • Alicia February 23, 2012 at 5:05 pm

This is the best! I got myself some of this ( and I didn’t have time to wash my hair before the next day) it saved me! What a wonderful creation!

  • Danielle Eaker February 27, 2012 at 1:35 am

I use Tigi Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo and it is amazing. I usually go ten days without washing my hair (I know disguisting right?? but before you judge my hair is long and extremely difficult to dry and style) but the funny thing is I get more compliments on my beautiful hair when it is the dirtiest!!!

  • Elaine May 11, 2012 at 9:28 pm

Ok, I am new to this whole dirty hair thing, and I am struggling… My body demands a shower EVERY day or things get ugly (literally). Does not washing my hair mean no shower, or just no shampoo in the shower??

    • missy May 12, 2012 at 12:34 am

No, you can still shower! Just keep your hair out of the water (or even use a g-ma shower cap) haha!! 🙂

  • erica May 18, 2012 at 3:46 am

I love the Bastiste dry shampoos over almost every brand ever made, and yes I have tried almost every one. From the expensive ones to the cheapest ones, batiste works the best! I love the tropical scent over the original or blush scents they offer at Sally’s. The best thing about the batiste is that is super affordable, especially since I got through it quite frequently. Anyone who wants to try it should definitely invest in a shower cap and a boar bristle brush. I have fine hair and I have found that if I brush it out really well with the boar bristles and then a regular brush there is no white mess or itchy dryness. I also love using a dry conditioner or shine spray with it like queen for a day by bedhead to help with restyling. I NEVER EVER thought I’d be able to go without washing, now I am so happy not having to do all that everyday I am looking for ways to extend my time in between washes. By the last day, my hair is in a high messy bun, and I get more hair compliments on this day than the day I wash it-on style and smell :))

    • Wendy May 28, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Where do you buy this dry shampoo from?

    • Jordan August 20, 2012 at 1:56 am

Kroger sells batiste, and it is definitely the best dry shampoo i’ve ever used. Also, you can get it for really cheap off of amazon. I think the batiste website also shows where you can buy it.

  • Kate @ Kate As Of Late May 20, 2012 at 6:15 am

Love, love, LOVE your blog! My hair is currently out of control long, and I am having a hard time dealing with it! Your blog is awesome and I can’t wait to use all your tips!
I also use beyond the zone, and I have trained my hair to go 4-5 days between washes! I said this to my Mom once and she goes “eew! You’re smelly!” and I had to laugh and tell her that I might not wash my hair everyday but I do bathe everyday! My hair has grown super fast and doesn’t break or fall out hardly at all! I can’t wait to add more of your tips to my routine and see how much nicer it can get!
    😀

  • Bailey May 24, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I use dry-shampoo. A lot of people think it’s gross to go without washing your hair, but I absolutely swear by the stuff. I use the Tresemme!

  • Holli May 25, 2012 at 3:17 am

I have extremely oily hair and skin. I have been told to reduce washing and use dry shampoo but I get nasty creases in my hair from ponytails or head bands (I have a full head of FINE hair) and just wash to start over.. SO my question is- will getting away from washing my hair help reduce this issue? Am I creating a vicious cycle of remnants of yesterday’s hair do?

    • Terry October 25, 2012 at 1:53 am

Maybe try just dampening your hair to get the creases out, blow dry and then use the dry spray shampoo. I’ve done it and it can work.

  • Jennifer May 25, 2012 at 8:56 pm

I use dry shampoo occasionally, but I find it makes my hair really dry and static-y. Is there a solution to this?

    • Sarah September 2, 2012 at 2:43 pm

I use leave in conditioner spray on the bottom half of my hair and that really helps it from looking and feeling dry and straw-like.

  • Kala May 28, 2012 at 5:04 am

Point of advice. I tried an expensive dry shampoo and hated it. I then bought the $2 Sauve can think “what the heck!” and it is by far the BEST I have used. 🙂

  • Suzanne May 28, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I have fine hair and it is currently permed, on the days that I do not wash it and I want it curly I have to give it a good rinsing to revive the curl, if I want it straight I often have to to deal with the hair that wants to stick. I have tried dry shampoo but it does not seem to do anything about the way oily hair is weighed down on my scalp. Any suggestions?

    • Bri January 25, 2013 at 7:31 pm

after applying the dry shampoo, flip your head upside down and take a blow dryer to your roots, it will fluffen things up and help lift your roots so they dont look so weighed down

  • Wendy May 28, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Love love dry shampoo!! I tried the one you said you use. But did not do a great job on my hair. Now I am using ‘Schwarzkopf got 2 b rockin it 4 ever style stay’. I purchased it at Walmart. I hope some other’s put where they bought there’s at. I totally agree about “retraining” your hair to get use to shampooing less often. I can also attest that this worked for me 🙂

  • Ashlyn May 28, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Try Victoria’s Secret Dry Shampoo. It smells AMAZING and doesn’t leave the white residue everywhere!

  • Lara May 30, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Can any of the regular dry-shampoo users attest to how well it holds up to sweat? I’m afraid to use it in really hot weather/ days where I plan to do an intense workout in case the powder/sweat combo turns into white clumps on my scalp.

  • Charlee May 30, 2012 at 8:08 pm

My hair is horribly oily, I always have to wash it every morning, and by the end of the day, my bangs (if not all of my hair) is an awful, greasy mess. I’ve tried the Tresseme and Suave dry shampoos, they work alright when I first use it in the morning (minus my hair feeling grimy and powdery), but by late morning/early afternoon, my hair looks pretty greasy again. Maybe I’m not using the right kind? I would appreciate any tips that anyone with hair similar to mine has. My hair is thin(ish), slow to grow (don’t know if that helps at all), and currently the longest part of my hair is in between my shoulder blades. I rarely blow dry (I know, for shame) and often don’t have time to style, which usually styling means my hair gets greasy more quickly, so I don’t worry about it too often.

    • Terry October 25, 2012 at 2:04 am

I can soooooo sympathize! My hair is fine and oily. Once, when I was physically sick and did not wash my hair for just 2 days, my nephew (adult) asked me if my hair was wet! I just use the dry shampoo as often as I need it. Even if that means twice in one day. But I do find that then I have to wash my hair the next day or it is completely unmanageable. The one great benefit of using the dry spray shampoo, is that it adds volume because the powder sticks to each strand of hair. This is great for those of us who have very fine hair. Hope this helps.

  • Sonya May 31, 2012 at 3:09 pm

My sister is a hairstylist and she gave me a can of Big Sexy Dry shampoo when I was having surgery and wouldn’t be able to wash my hair for a few days. I LOVE IT!! I use it every other day! Tell the girl that commented above me that the 2 shampoos she listed are very bad for your hair. That may be why she is having so much trouble.

  • Betty May 31, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Found you on Pinterest and I have forwarded your blog to all my girlfriends.
I know someone asked it but can you PLEASE suggest to the following:
What about those of us that workout everyday and sweat at the crown???
I have put a dab of shampoo on just the “rim” around crown. Meaning right above forehead and rim around the top of neck. (not sure what to call that) then I blow dry that. It feels heavy. Any other suggestion?

  • Tere June 1, 2012 at 5:35 pm

From a tired momma who’s always looking for ways to extend the life of a wash (and I’m not a hat person)….thanks for the advice! Going to try the dry shampoo ASAP.

  • Rachel June 1, 2012 at 8:40 pm

What if you’re an avid, every day runner? Does not washing your hair and using dry shampoo still work then?

  • Collette June 2, 2012 at 4:59 am

@ Lara, you won’t have a white clumpy mess….just make sure not to use too much of it when you apply it. After your workout you could even put a little more in your hair to help absorb the sweat if you can’t get to a shower asap, as long as it’s not dripping wet. I’ve used the beyond the zone from sally’s and big sexy dry shampoo. I like them both, but have to say I like the big sexy a little more, (maybe for the smell) but it is more costly. Also for those of you who like to use the dry shampoo on clean hair you need to check out powder play by big sexy…it is awesome!! It is a styling powder that works similar to the dry shampoo but it is a powder you sprinkle on and a little goes a long way. It gives a little more volume and umph! It’s my favorite new product! (new to me anyway)

  • Mackenzie June 3, 2012 at 2:20 am

I know you say hair can be trained, and I’ve read this before, but my hair canNOT be trained! I went for two weeks washing my hair every other day (more than once I’ve tried) and I still looked like a grease monkey. I’ve tried different dry shampoos and they just make my hair look cakey and feel even dirtier. I have really silky hair and bangs so I think I’m destined to be an everyday shampoo-er 🙁

    • Jenn May 21, 2013 at 6:08 pm

It can take over a month for your hair to adjust and produce less oil. Hormones also play a role, so may not be able to control it sometimes.

  • Lisa June 5, 2012 at 12:40 am

I have used a little baby powder when I was in a crunch for time…mainly around my bang area. I have an oily forehead and it tends to make my bangs look oily quickly. I will definitely give the dry shampoo thing a try! Thanks!

  • Heather June 10, 2012 at 3:03 pm

You have totally changed my life! A bit dramatic? haha, i think not… i have since the on set of puberty been an every day washer, trying every now and then to go one extra day in between, with the same result, greasy yucky hair… When i crossed your blogs path a week ago, i decided to commit and try out your plan, extending the washing to even every two days with the dry shampoo. The result? AMAZING, i am so grateful for your post!! and plan to pass these amazing secrets on to my little sister who unfortunately has inherited the same greasy gene! <3

  • Andrea June 11, 2012 at 4:56 am

I am a HUGE supporter of dry hair shampoo and have been using it for years. Every since I saw an episode of “What Not to Wear” and the hair stylist, Nick, said that some people do not have to wash their hair for literally a week! If Nick Orojo says it it must be true. So, I went on the quest of trying all brands – inexpensive and pricey. I have purchased lots of brands and what works for my hair best is Oscar Blandi. I have very thick, course, dark-colored hair; so I find that a lot of brands leave the white powder look. I don’t feel like the OB brand does. So, thanks for sharing and also letting me add my two cents worth.

  • Amy June 11, 2012 at 6:59 pm

I am a hairstylist and I LOVE dry shampoo! I usually use TIGI Dirty Little Secret, which also helps with that oily smell of hair! I have also heard great things about the Big Sexy Hair dry shampoo that it gives lots of body. Dry Shampoo can be tricky to use in darker hair, as it does have kind of a powdery look, so its best to use it very lightly and rub it around with your fingers to help blend.

  • Erika June 13, 2012 at 12:12 am

I love, love, looooove this blog, and your tutorials!! I had a question for you about the dry shampoo and flat-ironing hair…on the days when you don’t wash your hair and use dry shampoo, do you still flat-iron your dry hair? And do you do this every day? Thanks for your help!!

  • Leslie June 15, 2012 at 6:29 am

I love tigi rockaholic dry shampoo its the best! I use it for teasing my hair up really big to ….it holds a tease so good! 🙂

  • Laura June 17, 2012 at 12:01 am

doesn’t the dry shampoo show up white on dark brown hair? how do you get rid of the powdery look?

    • jenny August 23, 2013 at 5:27 am

I use Batiste Dry Shampoo (a hint of color: medium and brunette. It’s slightly tinted, so I barely have to rub it in! If you have light brown hair, there is also one for that! I buy mine from Urban Outfitters. I’ve tried various kinds and this works the best for me!

okay so i get how to use it and all but i have black hair so i was wondering if the dry shampoo would stick out like a sore thumb haha

    • kristin August 21, 2012 at 8:17 pm

They make dry shampoo that has a color tint to it, so your roots don’t look white.

  • Emily June 18, 2012 at 1:12 pm

The new DOVE dry shampoo is my favorite! It’s amazing, doesn’t leave any gross residue and seems to last the longest and work the best for the amount you get and the price. It also doesn’t have a funky smell like some others do!

  • Cj June 18, 2012 at 8:47 pm

I go over the road with my truck driver husband (this was a big change for me), I’m a Girly Girl. So needless to say the washing my hair every 3 days thing wasn’t flyin! Then I discovered dry shampoo aka little miracle worker! My hair is super healthy now and no one suspects it’s super dirty! Thanks for your article!

  • Ashley June 20, 2012 at 12:19 am

I have tried numerous amounts of dry shampoo; both expensive and dirt cheap. I have found the dirt cheap to be the best. The Suave Professional Dry Shampoo is only about $2 or $3 and it smells fantastic and does a superb job!

  • Barbi_65 June 20, 2012 at 2:47 am

I’ve been doing this for years! My friends can’t believe how long I go between washing my hair. (usually between 3-5 days) They used to take bets. LOL. My hair is naturally medium brown, but I color it very blonde. By not washing it everyday, thus subjecting it to the hairdryer it is long and healthy. I too like the DOVE dry shampoo.

  • skaggsmom2 June 23, 2012 at 3:47 am

This is something I am so going to try. I am always arguing with my husband about showering when we go camping. I don’t mind going a couple of days without a shower, but I have a ton of very fine hair and at the end of the day it is oily and grose. I think you just saved me a few arguments with my husband this summer, and a lot of quarters at the camp ground showers.

  • Penny Flaherty June 24, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Batiste can be found at CVS, Walagreens, Target.

  • Jessica June 29, 2012 at 4:27 am

The new dry shampoo by dove smells great and works wonderfully!

  • TM June 29, 2012 at 4:41 pm

I normally don’t post on blogs but I found this and I have to share my good news. I have really fine hair and never thought that dry shampoo would work for me. I have tried muliple brands, including expensive. The best brand I have found is Psssst from Wal-Greens. It is around $7-$8/can. Yes, it is THAT cheap and it works wonders!

  • Rhianna July 2, 2012 at 9:52 pm

I noticed NO ONE commented about the one that has worked wonders out of all the ones I tried! CAKE! It comes in a light and dark hue so my dark tresses don’t looks like I put baby powder on my roots. Not only that it smells DELICIOUS and can be used all over your body (haven’t tried that yet). I pick it up at Sephora!

  • jkc July 3, 2012 at 1:51 am

I use baby powder. I bought a dry shampoo (the spray kind) it it made my hair sticky and oily it just felt really weird that I just had to step into the shower. I’ve tried baby powder before and it worked great! I now use only baby powder instead of spending money on dry shampoo. Sprinkle a little throughout the roots and let it sit then massage your scalp and the oil is gone!!!

    • missy July 5, 2012 at 1:10 pm

I’d caution against baby powder unless it’s talc free. talc has been proven to cause caution. burt’s bee’s brand is talc free and would do the trick 😉

  • Alex July 5, 2012 at 4:12 am

It really surprises me that more people don’t know about this, but a trick that I like to use instead of spending so much on dry shampoo (which really isn’t that good for your hair follicle) I use mineral make-up. Let me start by saying that I also have dark brown hair, so dry shampoo lead me to the white haired grandma look instead of healthy unshiney hair. And I bought a cheap bronzer that looked AWFUL on me. I had been trying to get my hair more healthy by not washing it and I found that after about a day and a half it looked super greasy. I just put a little bit of bronzer in my hair and the grease was gone with no powdery residue!

  • ashley July 10, 2012 at 1:12 am

I work out everday and sweat like crazy. How can I not wash my hair everyday when I am sweating.

  • Lisa July 10, 2012 at 4:06 am

I am an everyday wash my nasty hair girl too. I used Tresseme twice and the darn thing clogged up!! Both times. So I bought Sauve and the smell is disgusting!! I next tried Psssst from Walmart and I love it!! I will be trying a few of your suggestions. Thanks girls!! Love hearing input on these products!!

  • Gretchen July 11, 2012 at 4:57 pm

I use product (mouse and hair spray) in my hair to hold the curl. My hair after a day is stiffer and thicker so I have been just rinsing it out with water to get the product out. I currently shampoo/condition every other day. Should I hold off from doing that as well and just use the dry shampoo for a couple more days?? I live in a very dry climate and my hair gets dry and freezy easily. I would LOVE not to have to wash it or even rinse it everytime I’m in the water. Do you recommend the dry shampoo for my teen that gets oil hair everyday? She washes it every other day as well.

  • Val July 14, 2012 at 8:29 pm

When you say that you don’t wash it for 3-5 days…do you still get it wet? Do you still use conditioner? Or dry it/ style it once and be creative for days?

  • Sarah July 16, 2012 at 4:18 pm

I’ve become very interested the use of “dry shampoo”. I have dark brown hair of normal thickness, but I am forced to wash my hair Every Day because if I don’t, I’m left with greasy, flat and lifeless hair, which forces me to curl my hair everyday as well just to put some volume back into my hair. Unfortunately, I now have split ends and fried hair, therefore if I straighten my hair or leave it uncurled, my fried hair is very noticeable. So I think I will give this a try. My question to you is, what shampoo and conditioner would you recommend for me to use, that is the best for hair like mine and has the least chemicals and alcohol in it?

    • Jenn July 17, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Hey Sarah…I recently decided to go blonde (I am also a natural brunette) and I have -obviously- found that my hair is fried! I have recently discovered coconut oil and have become a huge fan! Last night I used a little on my hair applying it from root to tip and wrapped it up. I went to bed, washed it out in the morning, and it’s obvious to see it’s benefits! I would give it a little while to really help restrengthen your hair, there are other alternatives if that doesn’t work for you: olive oil, eggs, mayo, etc…I find a lot of cool ideas on Pinterest! Good luck!

  • Patty July 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I have been a stylist for over 25 years, and I think dry shampoo is the best invention yet. I use it all the time before doing an “updo” helps give the hair that little bite to hold the style. Looks great too because it helps take out that greasy flat look!

  • Heather July 17, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Try NYM (Not your mothers) clean freak dry shampoo. I too have tried several brands, and this one works the best and smells the best!

  • Jenn July 17, 2012 at 8:09 pm

I just use a mixture of equal parts baking soda and cornstarch. I poured and mixed them up in a mason jar and I keep it in the washroom! If I notice any oil that’s come up between washes, I just rub it into my hands (like chalk) and apply to the crown. I also do what you do, and brush out any extra and voila! I can’t take credit for the genius idea tho, I found it on Pinterest (as I did you!) and I loved it! http://joyfilleddays.com/%20/diy-dry-shampoo/

  • Jennifer July 18, 2012 at 1:42 am

Suave keratin dry shampoo is great and I love the smell of it.

  • ashly July 19, 2012 at 12:15 am

I tried Tresseme its horrible, it would leave my hair hard like hair spray.. then when I would rub it in my hair, It would be all over my finger tips. I like to use Batiste, come in 3 different smells, and I find it leave my hair soft.

  • Jen July 20, 2012 at 4:22 am

Hi! I am also a 5-6 days/week workout girl. And sweat real good 🙂 I don’t see that anyone has addressed the other workout gals concerns. Maybe no one knows?!? When for some reason I don’t workout, I don’t wash my hair. Otherwise I feel like I have to because of the salty-ness from my sweat. I am assuming the dry shampoo can’t help with that…what can those of us who workout everyday do??????

    • Chelsie July 30, 2012 at 11:37 pm

You can still use the dry shampoo or baby powder! You just may not be able to go the 4 to 5 days like others!

    • Mer October 19, 2012 at 12:15 am

You can us just water to rinse out the sweat and then use the dry shampoo. Another thing you can do instead of (or in addition to) getting it wet, is I sometimes wash just the little bit around my face since it gets the most sweaty. I blow dry that part, and since it’s such a little bit that’s wet it dries quickly. Then I dry shampoo the rest of it. Hope this helps! Oh, and as far as brands, I have Batiste which can also be bought from drugstore.com and I like the invisible dry shampoo from Salon Grafix. I get that one from Walmart, but I think it’s also at Sally’s.

  • Ryanne July 21, 2012 at 11:23 pm

My hair is thin (think, baby doll hair) and it gets oily SO easily. I’ve tried a few dry shampoos and they just don’t do it for me to go in public. I literally HAVE to wash my hair every day, even if i wash it at night, by morning its oily again.. Any suggestions?

    • shayla July 29, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Have you tried a cleansing shampoo? My hair is oily and i use Aussie-Cleanse and Mend and it allows me to wash every other day. No other shampoo I’ve found can to that. But cleansing shampoos do help with oil control.

  • Lori July 24, 2012 at 12:05 am

Will the dry shampoo still work if you use hair spray in your hair?

    • missy July 24, 2012 at 12:44 am

      Absolutely! I’m a hairspray junky…

  • Jennifer July 25, 2012 at 2:30 pm

What do you suggest if you get cradle cap? I started a while ago trying to shampoo my hair every other day (although I still had to shower every day) and my scalp started being really itchy and flaky, and my hair started falling out. I’ve gone back to washing it every day but it’s still like this! Is there a way to get rid of cradle cap AND wash your hair more infrequently?

  • shayla July 29, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Also, baby powder works just as well.

  • Rose July 30, 2012 at 8:30 pm

I’ve used a few different dry shampoos and overall, I love them. For those of you who talked about the sweat-factor, I think if you’re really sweaty, you might just want to wash. I get sweaty-head just on hot humid days. The sides and back of my hair, on the underside, are just dripping with sweat. It’s gross. When that happens, I find that dry shampoo doesn’t help too much – it helps a bit, so it would hold you over if you needed to run errands and didn’t want to look like you just dripped out of the gym, but I am betting a shower will still be needed. :/
    The brands I’ve tried:
Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Shampoo, from WalMart – my favorite drugstore brand. Doesn’t show on dark hair!
Tresseme Dry Shampoo, WalMart or Ulta – SHOWS on dark hair. Like a boss. If you’re dark-haired, don’t use it!!!
KMS Hair Play, Ulta – This is good, but I don’t think it’s worth the price. It doesn’t offer quite as rich coverage, and doesn’t feel that nice either, and stinks. I’m just not that impressed for the price. Doesn’t show on dark hair, though.
Big Sexy, Ulta – My favorite so far. I love this. Doesn’t show on dark hair, does its job, doesn’t feel too bad, doesn’t smell too bad… Worth the price. Hope that helps!

  • Chelsie July 30, 2012 at 11:32 pm

I am a licensed Cosmetologist and you can use baby powder as well! It’s a much cheaper alternative and has the same effect!

    • missy July 31, 2012 at 12:36 pm

I’d just add to make sure the baby powder is talc free (which has been proven to cause cancer… eek). Burt’s Bee’s brand is talc free, however. 😉

    • Mer October 19, 2012 at 12:18 am

I’ve also made my own with cornstarch and cocoa powder. It makes the powder brown to blend in with my hair, plus it smells really great! I still like the spray dry shampoo better, but it’s more airline friendly for traveling.

  • Megan August 6, 2012 at 1:02 pm

I’m new to this blog, and have heard about the wonders of dry shampoo and wasn’t really keen on trying it until now.

I got the Tresseme dry shampoo at Target the other day, and have to say I’m truly not a fan. Besides Beyond the Zone, any other inexpensive brands worth trying?

    • Rachel September 19, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Try Suave Keritin (Target). I hated the Tresseme, also.

  • Kadie August 7, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Missy! Just found your blog via pinterest a few days ago and I must say I am obsessed!! I had been using Victoria’s Secret dry shampoo for about 3 months now and loved the smell, but the can always seemed to leak all over my bathroom (not okay), so per your recommendation I went out and bought the Beyond the Zone version and I LOVE it! Can’t wait to read future posts 🙂

  • Bethany August 12, 2012 at 12:29 pm

The tresseme brand is absolutely terrible! The spray nozzle is easily clogged and it has a terrible smell. I prefer the suave brand. It has a strong scent, but it’s not nasty and it works really well. I found the tresseme version was too wet.

  • Mary August 14, 2012 at 6:16 pm

I have EXTREMELY thick and wavy hair So I rarely ever blow dry it. Can I use dry shampoo when it is still damp? Does homemade dry shampoo work just as well as store bought?

    • Angela August 21, 2012 at 2:39 pm

I have an extreme mixture of lots of fine hair on the crown of my head and thick hair underneath. You should only use dry shampoo on dry hair otherwise you take away the oil your hair needs. Let your hair dry and then go use some dry shampoo! I have never used homemade dry shampoo! You will have to post about it and let me know how it goes because not all dry shampoos are cheap and the one I like costs $17 a can! YIKES!

  • Kate August 18, 2012 at 3:53 pm

I use Suave with Keratin dry SHHampoo

  • Missy August 19, 2012 at 6:24 pm

OMG! I found you through pinterest and when I read this post I NEW I had to try this stuff. I am seriously in love with Rock On dry shampoo now! Thank you, and I love your blog!

  • Angela August 21, 2012 at 2:36 pm

YES! I am the same way! I have colored RED hair and to prevent it from fading I use dry shampoo! Best thing that was ever invented! I love Big Sexy Hair’s dry shampoo though. It gives AMAZING volume, and my body thanks my dry shampoo for all the extra beauty sleep I get when I use it!

  • Peggy August 21, 2012 at 10:57 pm

Ok, I am on day one of this “test”. I have tried the Beyond the Zone before, and didn’t like it. After reading this blog, I do believe I was using it incorrectly. So I am trying again. I have taken note of all the “brands”listed in all of the posts. I will try one at a time until I find one I love. IF this brand doesn’t work.Thank you for the instructions on how to use it. I will check in after,5 days of no shampoo…

    • Peggy August 23, 2012 at 1:02 pm

I am on day three. So far so good. I have thin curly hair that I straighten everyday, so usually by the end of day two I feel in desperate need of a wash. It does feel a little bit on the strawy <—word of the day) side though, so i just rub some CHI silk infusion below the crown of my head and that seems to get the job done. I did pick up a new dry shampoo I didn't see mentioned above yesterday by got2b AND it also has a Dry CONDITIONER,after this five days I am going to try that set. I think by day four I will most likely be going into hair up in a clip mode. More so psychologically, because "I" know it hasn't been washed, and have to get past this feel gross frame of mind. On to my day three spray now, have a great wash free day all 🙂 ….

  • abby August 22, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Hello! I just found your website a few days ago, and I love it as well!
I hadn’t ever really heard about dry shampoos but I got Beyond the Zone and I am amazed by the results 🙂 I am going to try the every other day thing.

I’m going to try and make the infinity scarf now!! Keep up the good work!!

  • Tabatha August 23, 2012 at 12:29 am

I workout everyday and get VERY sweaty, I’m training for a competition.. I do need to keep my hair healty and I’ve got the d***ed if I do d***ed if I don’t kind of uber thin straight blonde hair.. the more I wash the more dry it gets but if I do w/o washing just one day I can’t hide it w/ anything!! I read somewhere, I believe cosmo, to use baby powder, works for a few hours but then it’s icky beyond icky!! I fear dry shampoo won’t work for me.. suggestions?

  • Abi August 25, 2012 at 3:23 am

I noticed that when I use dry shampoo on clean hair, it leaves my clean hair greasy, all brands I have tried I have had it happen.

  • Hollie August 25, 2012 at 1:11 pm

I have naturally curly hair which doesn’t get oily that quickly at all (I mean like 3-5 days before I even see oil) I am currently on my 4th day without a wash. The good thing about curly hair is that there’s no certain way it HAS to look. When I wake up, I see if there are any pieces that need to be tweaked. If so, I take a water bottle, spray, and scrunch. After that I just put some of Rusk’s handy dandy Wired in my hair, (probably my favorite product for curly hair) hairspray, and go. Don’t be afraid to not wash your hair!

  • Lauren August 27, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Someone above mentioned mineral makeup, and they’re right! I can hit my temples with a little bit of mineral veil and it does away with the greasy look there. Also, for a super cheap dry shampoo, you can use pure cornstarch on a face brush. Swirl the tiniest bit around onto the brush and tap it off just like you’d do for your face poder but apply it to your roots. Brush out with a bristle brush to get rid of the white. I’ve also found Suave to be the best dry shampoo. My husband loves the smell of it and it’s super cheap. It doesn’t leave a hairspray like residue some of the others do. Batiste is also a great one that doesn’t leave that sticky feel. I always take a bottle camping and leave some in my car in case I have dinner out after a long day of work.

  • Dayna August 27, 2012 at 5:28 pm

CORNSTARCH is absolutely the best thing for oily hair. I have strawberry blonde hair and it doesn’t show at all if you use a light touch. You don’t need much! I have tried many dry shampoos and don’t like the way they make my hair feel stiff, altho for an updo, this would be better. Cornstarch is cheap, I have a dedicated box in my bathroom and I just dip 2or 3 fingers in and then rub it around the roots of my hair and brush and the oil disappears. Try it!

  • Lauree September 2, 2012 at 3:38 am

What is your stance on a homemade dry shampoo? I’ve heard about them but I’m still skeptical.

  • Kit September 2, 2012 at 4:13 am

I remember dry shampoo in the 70s and if I remember correctly it was called Shhhhh (or something similar). I’m new to your site and have been enjoying it so much. I have long curly (caucasion) hair that I wash one a week, but I wet it and condition it every day. When I straighten my hair I can let it go for a week also (I don’t get it wet) with flat iron touch-ups, because it is dry. But it gets kind of stinky. Is there a dry shampoo that you would recommend for me?

  • Sarah September 2, 2012 at 2:52 pm

I use to wash daily as my hair was oily but after having my daughter I just didn’t have time. I slowly moved to every second day and then I discovered dry shampoo and I can easily go 3-4 days. Lately I,vebbeen pushing it further and I get tons of compliments on my hair cause the volume is amazing and my hair usually flat. I,ve tried the Oscar Blanti brand which was good but it is expensive. I,ve recently tried Got2Be (Im in Canada) and it works great but it’s really messy and leaves Colour in dark hair if you don’t brush it out well but the resilts and price r worth the extra work. Love your blog and check regularly for updates!

  • Ali September 12, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Have you tried Neutrogena Anti-residue Shampoo? It is seriously the most amazing product I have found. It really helps me stretch to that 3rd day in combination with dry shampoo. I highly recommend this ladies!! Save time and save your hair!

  • Kim September 12, 2012 at 6:18 pm

I have very only hair. I usually wash at night because I just don’t have time in the mornings. When I do this, it usually starts looking oily by the next afternoon. In addition to the oiliness, my scalp also gets very itchy if I try to skip a day of washing. I have tried a couple of different dry shampoos, and both made my hair feel dirtier and did not help the itching at all. I would really appreciate any suggestions for this problem.

  • Angela September 15, 2012 at 1:29 am

i am ALL FOR not washing my hair everyday!! especially when i actually style it and want it to last a few days… i do have one question though… what about after i work out? i (try) to work out at least 3 days per week and i am NOT one of those girls at the gym that runs with their hair down and looks flippin adorable the whole time and then leaves the gym looking just as pretty as when i walked in. i get sweaty!! So, can i still use the dry shampoo and get away with going 3 days without shampooing? i’m tired of planning the days i straighten/style my hair when i know i’m not headed for the gym within the next couple days!!

  • Katie September 16, 2012 at 7:15 pm

Is dry shampoo safe for colored hair? I have always avoided it in fear it would strip my color- and that freaks me out! Thanks!

  • Kim September 17, 2012 at 11:33 am

From a hairdressers perspective, dry shampoo is the bomb diggity! Yes, your tresses are much healthier without the constant scrubbing from shampoos but more importantly is you have color treated locks, the color stays richer and more vibrant longer …especially for us chemically enhanced red heads! Also a must if you’ve invested your wardrobe money in a Keratin Smoothing treatment, the less you shampoo, the longer your hair will stay smooth and frizz free! I use KMS Hair Makeover Spray in my salon and love the fragrance (light) and texture it provides.

  • Jessie September 19, 2012 at 10:06 pm

Do you get it wet and rinse it in the shower or use a shower cap?

    • Shanna September 22, 2012 at 6:13 pm

This is what I’d like to know, also!

  • Nicole September 23, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Can you tell me how to apply dry shampoo to curly hair?

  • Nicole September 23, 2012 at 10:43 pm

How do I need to apply dry shampoo to curly hair?

  • Sue September 25, 2012 at 1:10 pm

    Jessie and Shanna,

On your days off from shampooing, simply cover your hair with a shower cap, then shower, keeping your hair dry. I actually find wrapping my head with a towel and securing with a hair clip works better – shower caps don’t always seal well. I like to use a thin towel, wrap around my hair while my head is upside down, then secure towel with an elastic headband wrapped around the whole thing to hold it in place (or use the hairclip). Hope this helps! 🙂

  • sara September 25, 2012 at 9:06 pm

i have used dry shampoo for years and i am in love with it!!! another good one is the got 2 be one..it adds extra volume.. p.s not washing your hair as much = your hair growing way faster..thanks for sharing!!!

  • shcurry85 September 27, 2012 at 1:07 pm

LOVE dry shampoo, I am currently on day 4 of not washing my hair, just a few spritzes of the dry stuff and my hair looks good as new!

I can go up to 6 days, if my hair is its normal curly self!

    3-5 if I straightened it.

    YAY for dry shampoo!

  • Tiffiany September 30, 2012 at 4:12 am

I have super thick hair and I only wash it about every 4-5 days. I do go to the gym quite often. I use Rockaholic Dirty Secret and truly love it. I have used a lot of cheap and expensive dry shampoo but I feel like Rockaholic smells the best, gives the best coverage and holds the your style the best! I used to wash my hair frequently as well but I dyed it red and since red fades fast I can’t wash it often, hence my discovery of dry shampoo.

    • Vicki October 15, 2012 at 1:23 am

      Where do you buy it?

  • Paige October 2, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Maybe someone already mentioned this, but Corn Starch works just as well (better in my opinion) as dry shampoo and you get a whole lot more for your $$$. All you do is apply a small amount to the palm of your hand, rub it together between both hands and massage into your scalp. It’s AMAZING! I tried the dry shampoo and the white residue was too much for me to handle.

  • nicole October 5, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I have very oily hair, i work out every day and my scalp gets sweaty so what should i do??

  • Vicki October 15, 2012 at 1:21 am

I have bought the spray and the next time I go to use it–its empty. At first I thought my daughter was using it. I bought a new one and it did the same thing

  • Shannon October 15, 2012 at 7:16 pm

Ahhh what a relief. Ive been looking around for ways to control that greasiness that shows up the day after i wash my hair. I dye my hair and washing it everyday.even with cold water i know makes it brittle. I an going to the store ASAP to pick some of this up. I thought the greasy hair was an issue with my genetics or whatever i was eating. Im glad im not the only one AND there is a solutiin!!

  • Steph October 18, 2012 at 12:15 am

My problem is ill wash my hair the first day and the next day I have to wash it for 2 reasons… 1 is that it’s sticking flat to my head and even when I use dry shampoo it still looks dirty 🙁 2 is the second day my hair stinks and I don’t wanna be near people and them saying that girl needs a bath. Also another reason is I can’t stand the feeling of dirty hair on the back of my neck it makes me feel gross.

  • Kelli October 21, 2012 at 1:28 pm

I have brown hair, so I have used dry shampoo for brunette hair and the white residue was never a problem.

  • Nikoldyson October 22, 2012 at 4:12 am

I use The Austrialian Brand Kevin Murphy, his dry shampoos comes in a powder or spray. All his products smell Devine, and his website has tutorials on how to use the products. $22 per can but it lasts forever!

Get this…I can get away with not washing my hair for a whole week! I trained my hair beginning 1-2 years ago and at 6 days I should wash it but I can go the 7th day with a cute sock bun! I love PSSST! Dry shampoo and Tresemme! I’ve also noticed that having waves provides texture to prevent that flat to your head oily look you might get with straight hair from not washing it, I curl my hair with my NuMe wand on the second day and curl every other day (this takes me 10 minutes with long hair down to past the middle of my back) Love this post! Oh and my hair is healthier too 🙂

I don’t know if anyone wrote this as there are a lot of comments but I used baby powder..so much cheaper and it smells beautiful (the have lavendar, cocoa butter; any scent of baby powder) It does the same thing without the cost or odd smells…I tend to put mine in at night so by morning it’s done it’s job and there is no light residue!

  • anna November 14, 2012 at 5:16 am

i use the brand “its not your mothers” dry shampoo its 6.99 i think or 5.99, works like a charm! smells great! you can get it from ulta, cvs thats where i have seen it. It sound to cheap to be true but its the best way better than the 30 dollar cans I would get!

  • Viktoria November 25, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Aaahahahha, the tips are fine, but YOU are hilarious!!! XD
If you have blonde hair (light blonde) then it dosent really matter with the white 🙂 ( im naturally blonde ;D, but my hair was a liiiiiiiitlle brighter when i was little, so i think its fine that the dry shampoo is colouring it a liiittle brighter ;D)

  • Kathleen November 27, 2012 at 6:05 am

I may have missed this question being asked, but when you say not to wash your hair do you mean not even getting it wet? How does one keep their hair dry in the shower?

    • missy November 27, 2012 at 1:50 pm

      A shower cap works awesome!

  • Dana Duvall November 28, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Do you brush your hair at night on the dirty days, or in the mornings before touch up styling?

  • Kayla December 7, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Does using foam dry shampoo work the same?

    • missy December 8, 2012 at 4:55 am

I’ve actually never heard of foam dry shampoo. You’ll have to let me know if you end up trying it…

  • Maddie December 24, 2012 at 7:48 am

I’m so glad the dry shampoo secret is spreading, because I can honestly say it has changed my life! (As corny as that may sound) I’m a college student with early morning classes, so I don’t always have time to wash my hair in the morning. I have fine hair which always seems to get oily faster (lucky me), and so for years I washed my hair every. single. morning… My hair routine has changed from taking early morning showers to keep my hair un-oily and clean every morning, to only washing it maybe twice a week a night thanks to dry shampoo. Another benefit to washing my hair at night, I don’t have to ever blow dry it. (I think I blow dried my hair a total of two times the entire semester!) And my hair feels and looks sooooo much healthier. I have tried almost every dry shampoo under the sun, and some great drugstore brands I recommend are: Dove, Got2B and John Frieda.

  • Jenn December 27, 2012 at 5:42 am

I am a new user of dry shampoo, but I have been using powder in my hair for years to achieve the same results. i have really light blonde hair, so the powder doesn’t show, but I suppose with darker hair it might show if not applied properly, which is not a problem with the dry shampoo, but just wanted to share that in a pinch any kind of talc powder will achieve the same result.

  • Nic December 28, 2012 at 8:33 pm

You are so right about your glands over producing oil because of our over washing.
But, rather than dry shampoo, you can go completely without shampoo at all. I haven’t used shampoo in over 6 months and my hair looks healthy, i have less split ends, and i went from weird frizz to beautiful curls.
Being a bartender my hair definitely absorbs some smells at work. I jump in the shower and add a tablespoon of baking soda to a couple pints of water and dump it on my roots and work it in then rinse. When the Midwestern winters make my hair dry i add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the same amount if water to dump it in and rinse. I shower daily but only clean my hair 2 or 3 times a week.
After seeing my hair(and my bank account) without all the hair product insanity I’ll never go back.

I used to have such out hair that I need two showers a day. But as I get older my hair has gotten less oily. I have trained my hair to go two maybe the days using dry shampoo. I love dry shampoo now that I figured out how to use it so I don’t have white grandma hair. This saves so much time! great tip! I used to only use it when I was running late. Now I use it often. I refresh my hair style with spray gel because my hair falls flat a lot.I love the idea of saving time getting ready but still looking good. great tips!

  • Krista January 10, 2013 at 4:13 pm

I just went to target and bought Not your mothers clean freak dry shampoo. Hoping to love it because I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days and need a product like this! Maybe one day you can add a tutorial on applying? By the way I am new to your blog and love it! Thanks for introducing me to the dry shampoo option! Ever use clean freak?

  • McKayla Combs January 11, 2013 at 1:07 am

Ok, I love everything about this, but what would you suggest for when I’m exercising every day? My hair looks less than beautiful after a work out. Any tips? I would love to be able to get my work out in, and only have to worry about washing up without having to worry about washing my hair every day…gross I know, but I’m one of those people that like minimum effort when it comes to getting out the door every day. Thanks!

  • Amanda @ Once Upon a Recipe January 17, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Thanks to these tips, I can now go 3 (and sometimes 4) days without washing my hair. LOVE it. Such a time saver and I think my hair has become a lot healthier too! Merci beaucoup!

  • Jillian January 21, 2013 at 2:32 pm

FINALLY 🙂 I’ve been trying out different dry shampoos and this one did the trick! I also found out that if you have dark hair, you can put a slight amount of bronzing powder in your roots to make it less visibly greasy. YES!

  • Jen January 30, 2013 at 1:46 am

Missy! I just bought this dry shampoo last week and have used it twice now, it seems to be working great but It’s VERY difficult for me to get past feeling like my head is dirty even with the shampoo (I know I’m just not used to it yet). I am typically an every day washer with average to below average oil and I’m now starting to wash my hair every other day (even if that means dry shampoo and a cute little sock bun lol). Any whoo… about how long did it take for you to get to two days without washing?

  • Erica February 4, 2013 at 9:10 pm

Thanks for posting this! I currently wash every other day. I’d like to go longer (3-5 days) but have hesitated because I use Moroccan Cream on my hair for friz control. I’m concerned about product build-up in my hair, so I’m wondering if you use product on your hair (other than hairspray and dry shampoo) in between washing and if you have any trouble because of it. Thanks again!

  • Laura Lee February 6, 2013 at 5:44 pm

I love dry shampoo, too! My favorite is Psssst ($6) from CVS… it’s amazing! However, I am on a budget and I would go through it within a month. My friend told me that corn starch does the something. I’ve been trying it and it works well, but I’ve noticed on the third day of not washing my hair it gets extremely oil. Then, on the third say after I wash my hair it has weird texture to it. Any suggestions? Should I just suck it up and by Pssst and maybe alternate between corn starch and Pssst? Thanks for the help!!!

    • missy February 6, 2013 at 7:08 pm

Cornstarch becomes really sticky when wet (just from purely a cooking standpoint). I wonder if it’s leaving buildup on your hair when you wash it? I’ve heard of apple cider vinegar hair cleanses that help remove buildup. Haven’t personally tried that so I know I’m not being of much help. If you’re on a tighter budget baby powder doesn’t leave sticky buildup. But be sure to buy a powder that is talc free (check the ingredient list). Talc has been proven to cause cancer. Burt’s Bee’s is a brand that is talc free (not sure on the price point). Hope this helps! xo

  • Chelsea February 26, 2013 at 3:48 am

Do you have any tips on not washing curly hair everyday? I love my dry shampoo (Pssst… That I buyat Walgreens) but my hair seems to lose the curl the longer I go without washing. Day 1: spiral curls, Day 2: loose spirals, Day 3 : almost no curl. I hate to break out the curling iron but don’t really have any other ideas.

  • Jessica March 5, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Best brand I have EVER used is Suave, believe it or not. Same size as the salon brands, and works BETTER. Comes in a silver and yellow package and works wonders.

I worked in a salon for 6 years and have tried every possible brand there is out there, nothing is better than Suave. It works great, plus smells so good that my boyfriend tells my regularly I smell great when I use it. He thinks it is perfume (silly man lol).

At $3.50 or less a bottle, I buy out the place when I find it because not all stores carry it. 🙂

  • Meghan March 14, 2013 at 7:05 pm

I’ve been using baby power on my hair for years, and it works like a charm. I am a bleach blonde, so I’m not sure how good it will work on darker hard colours. I normally wash my hair every 3 – 4 days. I find the 3rd or 4th day curling it or doing some sort of updo helps.

  • Sara March 19, 2013 at 5:24 pm

What about people that have to wash there hair everyday because it become a Giant knot that is hard to brush out with out washing hair

    • Genifer April 28, 2013 at 9:37 am

I just posted something mentioning that I condition my hair some days instead of shampooing it. You could try that.

  • Rebecca March 26, 2013 at 1:56 am

I’ve been doing the whole not washing for 3-5 days for a few months now and told a friend the other day and she was so grossed out! I laughed as I read your post cause it was exactly like when I told her

  • Genifer April 28, 2013 at 9:36 am

I dont know if someone else has mentioned it yet but you know what else works really well? Baby powder. It works just as good and it smells nice. Any kind of talc will do, you can make your own dry shampoo with essential oils and … cornstarch, well there is a recipe online somewhere. I just sprinkle a bit of talc onto my scalp and rub in. I will condition my hair in between shampoos too, Ill get my hair wet in the shower a few times a week, but Ill only shampoo it once, maybe twice.

    • Genifer April 28, 2013 at 9:40 am

Ok, just read somewhere up there that ‘talc’ causes cancer… I live in england (but from america) and they call all baby powder ‘talc’… whether it has talc in it or not.

  • Meggie May 7, 2013 at 8:49 am

A few times when I have run out of batiste, I just used a bit of cocoa powder (baking, not hot chocolate). I have really fine, straight dark hair, and cocoa powder is very fine so when it’s worked in, it disappears. I prefer using batiste, but when I’m putting my hair up or in a pinch, it works. And it smells great too.

  • Taylor July 6, 2013 at 12:55 am

College student and highlighted blonde. Most days in class I just throw my hair up in a bun. I was just wondering if it would affect my highlights or if the dry shampoo would make it fade faster?

  • Rebecca August 29, 2013 at 1:37 am

Man, I don’t know. My hair gets oily fast and I’ve tried many dry shampoos and have never found one I liked. My hair is almost black so it usually makes it greyish and if it doesn’t it ends up looking dull. Plus it feels awful in my hair. D:

  • Dawn September 26, 2013 at 9:26 pm

How do you use this with very short spikey hair. I have to literally use a crap load of hair spray to make my hair do it do everyday. When I wake up I look like Dawn of the Dead. How would I use this with hairspray and all as I have to wash my hair daily. But I would like to grow my hair and have it look shiny.

  • Blayde May 1, 2014 at 4:22 pm

I used to use the whole dry shampoo technique a few years ago but stopped as it split my fringe. In hind sight I probably used too much as opposed to ‘a little goes a long way’ and after reading this article I have started trying this again. I have gone with your advice to use some on clean hair in the hope of preventing my hair being greasy the next day rather than waiting for the grease to make an appearance before using it and my hair feels fresh today rather than overloaded with dry shampoo.

Thank you for your article, fab idea!

  • Blayde May 1, 2014 at 4:29 pm

Also, I have very oily skin, particularly on my forehead and t-zone. Every morning I wake with a greasy fringe where the grease has transferred from my forehead. For about a year or more I have been washing my hair daily because there’s nothing I hate more than having greasy hair and overnight this would happen.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix up my skin so that I don’t stare into the mirror at grease central every morning please? Although the dry shampoo is fab, I don’t think I’m going to ever be able to wash my hair only 2 or 3 times per week if I can’t get my skin under control 🙁

  • Amanda May 29, 2014 at 4:14 am

I use the new Paul Mitchell dry shampoo and out of all the dry shapoos I have tried it works the best. I am a stylist so it is easier for me to get but ask your local stylist to get it for you.
It is definitely an amazing product and all of my hair friends have fallen in love with it too. I have a sensitive scalp and every dry shampoo makes my scalp itch very badly, even after several uses. The Paul Mitchell one itched me on the first use but now I use it every day for body and for oily scalp later on in the day without any kind of irritation. If you’re not a Paul Mitchell fan I say give it a try anyways!!
    Trust me ladies!!

  • Loubee June 5, 2014 at 2:41 am

I love it too! I only wash my hair once a week. I find the dry ‘poo gives more volume and texture too:)

  • Lily February 10, 2015 at 1:06 am

I just bought a bottle of Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo, as it was recommended on a Pinterest site. It has a very fruity scent. I can’t compare it to other dry shampoos as this is the first one I’ve tried. I got 2 bottles for $7 on sale at Shopper’s Drug Mart (Canada)

  • Sierra August 1, 2015 at 8:25 pm

I always find when I have used dry shampoo it covers the grease but makes my hair feel really gritty and nasty to the touch and I can not stand it. Is there a brand that you find works best to avoid this? I can barley go a day and a half without washing so it would be wonderful if I could find a dry shampoo that works best for me.
