A Heritage of Gratitude

November 21, 2011

A few weeks ago my dad sent me this picture of his dad (my grandpa, far right). Along with the photo, he mentioned how much my younger brother resembles him.

I then emailed Ryan’s dad to get a picture of his grandpa.

It got me thinking. What else do we take from our ancestors besides their genes?

Stories, traditions, faith, heirlooms, and definitely some favorite family recipes!

Ironically, this Thanksgiving I’ll be making one of my family’s favorite dishes that has been passed on down through my mom’s side – her famous Raspberry Salad.

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to reflect upon not only all that we’ve been given but all that have gone before us. It’s in times like these, all surrounding a beautiful table, that the past and present seem to reunite. Even though loved ones are gone they somehow feel nearer.

How will you spending your Thanksgiving?

I love looking at old photos; it’s so interesting to see what traits got passed down!

Last night Husby and I tried to figure out who we got certain traits from. It actually became quite comical…

That sounds like a great dish Melissa! Send me some leftovers to Cali! How are you feeling now? Hopefully better! I miss you! We need to catch up soon! Love you!

I love old photos like this… they remind me that life is not always just about the here and now. Somehow it makes me look at the “big picture” more when I see photos of my great-grandparents, grandparents, and even my parents. I love being able to look at a photo and literally see a different time. Everyone says I look like my maternal grandmother (she died when I was two), and when I look at photos of her when she was young, I see myself. It’s crazy and special all at the same time. 🙂

Isn’t that awesome that we take on so much from those we never even knew? My mom says the same thing about me and my deceased gma that I never knew (same personality and same tendency to be stinkers).

I’ll try and remember to post it. This pregnancy brain has got me thinking I have a case of the looneys. It’s a great salad for Christmas as well.
