DIY Baby Food 101

March 21, 2011

‘ello, mamas!

call me OCD {overly cautious dame} – “i’m freakin’ over mystery ingredients” in already prepared foods. it’s true. i can’t help it. so i make it {and have been since babe’s 1st bite}.

it’s as easy as opening a jar of the prepared stuff. well… almost as easy. but you’ll rest easier. that’s for darn sure.

  • Step 1: buy organic when possible

  • Step 2: wash all produce – simple baking soda & water does the trick

  • Step 3: boil water in double bot steamer

  • Step 4: place food item (don’t mix) in steamer and cover with lid

  • Step 5: steam until just tender/cooked through

  • Step 6: place cooked food in submersion blender gasket and process until smooth

  • Step 7: pour into glass pyrex storage containers

Make enough so you’re not doing this whole shindig EVERY dagum day! I make enough for a whole week and then it’s done! Any additional can be frozen using beaba containers {seen above} or ice-cube trays {defrost before serving}.

Food Pictured: green beans, carrots, chicken, and quinoa in vegetable broth

Brands I Use: Cuisinart steamer, Braun submersion blender, Beaba storage containers

I made all of my daughter’s baby food. It’s nice to know where their food is coming from, plus you can choose what flavors/spices to add and the consistency of the food. One tip I have is to use the cooking liquid when blending up your fruits & veggies. Alot of the nutrients leech out into the water when cooked and you can add them back in that way.

Brittany, you’re totally right! I forgot to add that step! I also add the cooking liquid! Oops! Thanks for catching that! 🙂 Can’t wait to check out your blog…

Let me know how it turns out for ya! I also have a food schedule – what foods I introduced, how much, and when! It can all be a tad bit overwhelming to say the least!

True’s new favorite homemade baby food is avocado and mango. So tasty! Plus it’s got a bunch of good fat to help my little guy make weight!

Sounds delish! Maybe I should transform that into a facial recipe… Hmm…

My Vada girl is 4 months old and has been showing an interest in our food. We spoke with our Pediatrician, and he said we can try to introduce rice cereal if we choose. We discussed it and thought we would like to give it a try. We want to make our own rice cereal, what do you recommend? I read that you can add in certain vegetables and fruits to the rice cereal as well. Any advice???
